Hornby's latest Blue & Grey Class 101

Has anyone seen Hornbys new Class 101 Blue/Grey 3 Car DMU? Is it Me or are Hornby having a laugh? Just check out the front end!! After this model was announced I sold my lima 101 as I assumed this would be a better model. Apart from the motor its a howler. Basically it has 2 headlamps fitted - 1960's style round ones, one where the high intensity headlight normally is and one above the destination blind!! Now I'm no rivit counter but Im sure that these headlamps were eraicated long befor Blue/Grey appeared or am I wrong? Oh and just to cap it off they have painted the bufferbeam red & given it a tan interior.....as well as red marker lights at both ends - and painted over the destination blinds in yellow!!!

I thought the days of second rate models had gone.......

....please Bachmann - do a Class 101 to the same standards as your 108 - it will sell by the shedfull !!!

Yep its a case of buyer beware!

A colleague of mine had one on order from a box shifter thinking he had a refurbished Blue/Grey Met Camm 101 on order. In fact what hes got is an early 1970s machine with three lamps along the bottom and one lamp above the destination screen. Very similar to the original Triang Met Camm dmu. I haven't seen one in blue grey but I know the Western Region (his has W region prefixed nos) did have blue /grey met camms before anyone else- so it may be correct.

I agree its an unusual choice of prototype though. Given the full yellow cab 121, I don't think they're exactly dmu experts at Margate!

It is correct! There are pictures posted (or links, at least) on another forum. The four marker lights (not headlamps!) were fitted to early batches but at least a few WR examples did get into blue and grey. Most, if not all, had the two centre lights painted yellow.

Check your facts before pointing fingers, please.

Ok then, well I hold my hands up if I'm wrong but its an unusual choice.........with a limited time frame.

A far more sensible choice would have been one that would appeal to the masses, ie just 2 marker lights, a black bufferbeam and some sort
of destination blind!

I have to admit though - I have bought one but only so I can swap my lima Network SouthEast bodyshells across onto Hornbys superior Chassis.
Once I've done it there will be a 3 car Blue/Grey DMU, Hornby bodied, Lima Chassis up for grabs - ebay job I think......

Sorry but this model is just not what it purports to be. The Hornby catalogue refers to it as being late 70s-80s. Most people will have expected a refurbished machine with tghe normal two lights at the front and a destination screen. This is just not it. No doubt someone at Hornby has a picture of the subject and decided that ir represented at Met Camm 101 from that period- but they have got it wrong.

If not lets see the picture. Also red buffer beams?

Its reasonable to make buyers aware that they may not be buying what they think they are. Even if this version is proven correct- it must have been a rare variant.

Admittedly it's a Scottish Region unit but it is dated 1984. No red buffer beams but the overall livery and appearance is correct. Agreed, Hornby do seem to choose rather limited prototype/liveries to model. There wre a few Western Region ones like this but I don't know vehicle/unit numbers.

That's exactly what happened with their blue Class 121 with the yellow doors. Only one or two such examples ever existed.

Actually , it was worse in that case as it was really a 122 that had full yellow cabs. The 121 was completely wrong!
