How can i find the "r" prefix numbers?

R496 is the Super 4 Double Level Crossing. (rarish)

R414 is the Super 4 Double Curved Level Crossing (very rare)

A double level crossing for Series 3 track was never produced and it is difficult to fit the Super 4 crossing to Series 3 track without modification and you don't want to do this as it ruins what is an increasingly rare accessory.

So you will have to run some Super 4 track through the crossing if you predominantly operate Series 3.

A pre 1962 R124 Toad is what you are after. Why don't you send me a personal message? I may be able to help you with this quest!

What was the first train set you played with?

As you are after one of these Toads with the diecast chassis the signs are that you played with Tri-ang train set first and not a Hornby Dublo train set as we are looking at the late 1950's or the early 1960's.

My first set was a Dublo 2006 Tank Goods Train Set in 1963 which was quickly followed up by the purchase of lots of cheap Dublo stuff during the amalgamation period.

My first Triang set was a Battlespace RS16 Strike Force 10 Set in 1966 and we have movies of me playing with this during the Xmas of that year. Scary!

However I liked the red LMS Jinty that Triang Hornby produced and so I quickly modified the green Battlespace Jinty to match the appearance of the LMS version. That was probably my first effort at a repaint and I still have the loco somewhere I think (in the loft?)

I will have to find it a take a picture!

Subsequent efforts include repaints of Princess Elizabeth locos and I have those too!

So who else can remember their first set?

Hi Rich,
I note that you have been given some guides to Hornby and Triang R numbers.
My favourite guide is in the back of a book called "The Hornby Book of Trains". It was first published by Rovex Limited in 1979 under ISBN Number 0 9506586 0 X.
It's an Ian Allan Library book The book itself is very interesting, but the list of R numbers is the reason that I've held on to my copy! It lists the numbers with their item descriptions for all R numbers used since 1951 'till 1979, some of them twice!!I have seen the books on eBay from time to time and they go for just a few pounds!
