Depends on the manufacturer. Bachmann are quite easy to remove, an ear bud and a little surgical spirit, normally does the trick I haven't tried the sugar but it sounds like it's worth a shot. Hornby can be very difficult. In some instances I've bought the Fox transfers which cover the whole area, it's quicker cleaner and does a great job. I normally seal everything off with some Artists varnish.
