I don't know about the answers to the questions raised by Gary, but I do have one or two memories of Deltics down here in the Isle of Thanet.
The first was whe Network Southeast held an open weekend at Margate around 1985 and one of the preserved examples was booked to be towed in by a 73. The pair arrived with the Deltic very obviously providing the power. Apparently some heads rolled over that!
The ther is of Deltics on the Virgin Birmingham - Margate SO service oh the noise. I still have photographs of the events.
