Well it's pretty obvious that most of the forum members favour UK outline but for those of us who prefer and also model something a bit more exotic I thought it would be interesting to see where the prefered locations are. Germany and the USA are likely to be top but it would be good to see what other locations are modelled. I haven't been able to include all locations due to various limitations but these are the most probable.

If you model something which comes in as other then please leave a comment so you can share your interest.

Another good poll Neil thanks,

Difficult one for me this one - I had to "vote" to reflect majority of the rolling stock I have. As many know, primarily SNCB, but the next project will be "MiniEuroscape".

Course, you also have these strange people that model HO UK outline
(full marks though for being a bit different
)

Oops I forgot all about that. Sorry. I also remembered Japan after I had done it but if anyone models anything else which I forgot, sorry but let us know anyway.

I resemble that remark! - I think I'm the only UK HO modeller on the forum, unless anyone knows different.

Good Poll Neil, I ticked the boxes I felt were most appropriate.

I'm curious what is available in British HO. I would prefer it to OO as it would look correct with my US and Australian steam. And if it's only diesel well it's only diesel but I'll still be somewhat interested.

Quite a bit actually - really depends on what period you are interested in - BRITHO is your man for this subject !

Polls can be interesting but can also be real awkward swine to set up!

I'm still thinking about this one, before actually voting.

1. If possible, it's a good idea to have a 'Not a vote' category, so that curious people who in this case might not model anything but British, can still see the results without being tempted to make a meaningless vote (for some random country that would screw the results). But, often, one runs out of needed categories before adding that option - even if one remembers it.

One way out would be to vote OTHER - but see next point.

2. In this poll, for the vote to be accepted, you MUST select an epoch as well as a country. I should be ashamed to admit it, but I can't remember the epoch dates. Tut-tut!
.
In any case, are the epochs universal throughout Europe or, as I suspect, probably in disgraceful ignorance, are they related specifically to German practice? Genuine question - I truly don't know the answer.
This poll could unexpectedly broaden my education!

I'll scratch my head (and slurp much coffee) for a bit longer before voting, but I'm dying to look at the results to date!
Of course that is never allowed - and with good reason.

Ozzie,

In answer to the above the honest reply is not much. As far as I am aware the ony current model available new is the English Electric 350HP shunter, which is currently available in NSB livery. (It has also been produced in NS colours). The Fleischmann Warship should still be available although it hasn't been made for several years, the same applying to their Bulleid coaches. Rivarossi made a Royal Scot and LMS coaches which if obtainable are nice Models. The main source for me has been Lima who made the class 33, Fowler 4F, BR mark 1's and an assortment of BR goods wagons. These are quite often to be found on ebay at sensible prices.

Additionally Jouef/Playcraft did a class22/29 and on 02 shunter in the 60's. Their coaches were too short but they did do some quite nice wagons.

Marklin do/did a Harry Potter set but I have never seen one in the UK, so can't comment on it.

The final item I am aware of is the Hornby ACHO USA tank, however the last one of those I saw was for sale at £120.00.

Mind you, at least my cars and trucks are to the correct scale!!

Don't forget the 66 (did'nt the British HO Society do a kit for one "pre-Mehano" ?) & the extra short Eurostar Sets made by Lima/Jouef & marketed by Hornby. Rolling stock wise there's always goods stock that used to go back & forth on the channel ferries (I think the hazadous stuff still does) & now use's the tunnel.
The Marklin Harry Potter set is either the US Bachmann one or the UK Hornby - I'm pretty sure the Bachmann one, with a modified loco.

Unless you want a butchered 4mm GW 4-6-0 , not much help I'm afraid

I've just realised that my G-Scale loco allows me to vote in this poll
. Shame I had to guess which epoch, but that's G Scale for you

With that in mind maybe I should have done a separate poll for Epochs. I didn't realise that you hd to vote for both items.

Anyway the Epochs are specific to changes in the German rail system but as most of Europes rail models are made by German companies the Epoch is normally mentioned for any European country in the catalogues. I don't really know exactly what the dates were but roughly Epoch I is when the individual states had there own railways. Epoch II is from when the were collectivised until the end of WW2. Epoch III is from the end of WW2 till some point in the seventies I'm sure someone else will define, Epoch IV is from the until then until relatively recently and Epoch V is now. As you can see I don't own an anorak or model Epoch III or IV.

How could I forget the 66!! The Eurostar is, however, seriosly flawed by a lack of intermediate coaches and a truly awful drive mechanism. The mention of the British HO society also reminds me that a number of kits have been produced for the society including the black 5 commented on by Gary in a different thread. Ferry vans are obtainable from most of the European manufacturers but care has to be taken to get the correct ones to the British loading gauge.

Ravenser suggested that the Marklin "Harry Potter" set would be either Bachmann or Hornby. I wouldn't have thought that Marklin would use either companies products on the grounds that they are not three rail. I am happy to be pulled up on that one if someone can come up with conclusive proof.

I did see a picture on some forum and it was rather obviously someone else's GW 4-6-0 butchered to take a headlight and to run on 3 rail

Not sure who did the mouldings, but its not going to be much use to you I'm afraid

I hope someone (which will now inevitably mean Margate) sorts out the HO Eurostar. I'm been driven to the conclusion the most modellable bit of LGV Nord /CTRL is from Calais Frethun to the French Portal and without an HO Eurostar you're stuffed. In fact without an HO Eurostar the only bits of the route possible to model are in the UK - you can't model LGV Nord or the Belgian high speed line at all.... Everything else is there but....

In HO it's not as if you can phone up Hurst Models for a set of etches for intermediate vehicles

It's unbelievable that one of Europe's most prestigious trains doesn't have a reasonable model of it. One along the lines of Trix's ICE3 wouldn't go amiss!

It's good to see from the poll what a wide spread of countries modelled we have. There are the understandable blips at Germany and the US but it's good to see other areas are covered too. It would be good to see some layouts of say Italy or New Zealand or even China?

It's nice to see the variety of subjects modelled these days, although China may be a bit expensive for figures (TIC) !

If someone produced a Eurostar of Trix quality they would sell at least two then Neil
- be nice to have a layout suitable to be able to run a full length one a full speed !

i have thought about doing a kit for the euro.
cast ends and etch the rest.

Its still on my 'think about it' list.

i am going through an eastern european phase at the moment. there wasnt a box for that on the list. i have a polish loco on the drawing board.

Peter
I probably should have put down eastern Europe instead of Latin America in retrospect. Roco have some good Eastern European models. There a couple of new ones just came out this month.

I have enough coaches for a full length ICE3 and am looking forward to seeing how fast it goes on my new layout as I now have plenty of space.. I never had it past halfway on my old layout which was small, as it is very fast loco. Should be good to see how fast it goes.

i can fill my layout with chinese stock, although it dosent have any scenery yet. or ballast or signals.....
