Lights not working on Hornby class 31

Hi

I fitted a bachman chip to my class 31 now the lights are not working (they did for a short time)
Is there a way of checking if the lights have blown?

If the command station is in a different speed step mode to the decoder then the headlight command may not be sent properly and the headlight command will not function properly.

Worth checking out the mode status.
