Liliput BR45

Dear All,

I have a brand new Liliput BR45 with sound, it certainly sounds terrific with the Loksound 3.5 however the pulling power seems not to be very good, it stalls on in incline of only 12mm in 600mm when pulling only 5 wagons, I was just wondering if anybody else has one and if the problem might be the motor or the gearing , it does have traction tyres and runs perfectly in a straight line, or it might have something to do with the decoder setting for acceleration and braking, anybody have any ideas?

*** it sound like motor and not decoder if the loco simply runs out of steam - No setting removes power like that unless top volts are set very low.

This loco usually pulls fine... weak magnets, poorly assembled motor, badly seated brushes, weak brush springs come to mind - I've recently seen exactly this with two HO scale Athaern loco's, a challenger and a big boy, both of which could barely pull the skin off a rice pudding.

Both were fixed quite easily, one with new brushes and the other with new brush springs (both were nearly new, but the brushes on one were only 1mm long, the springs on the other had no "spring").

if you can get to the motor / drive train take the motor out and test it - I suspect that it will be the problem.

Hi Anthony, Neil here. I had a similar problem with my BR05 which probably has the same motor. The issue related to the voltage of my system. I only found this out after Richard Johnson had a look at it. Other repairers could not find a problem. I would suggest speaking to Richard.

I'd forgotten about that one - the motor used isn't very voltage tolerant.

Neils was getting very hot which affected the power of the motor - the constant high voltage of his system was slowly cooking the motor, weakening motor brush springs and progressively weakening the magnet... We caught it in time to save the motor but we did have to replace springs and brushes.

The loco now works well but the long term fix was to drop rail voltage to a sensible level so other loco's etc wouldn't suffer the same fate.

What DCC system do you use? If its european, almost certainly it'll need track voltage dropping a little.

Hi Guys,

I have spoken to Richard at lenght about the problem with the BR45, I checked the voltage on my Lenx LZV100 and made CV50 what was needed to bring the voltage down to 14v but nothing changed so far. I also ran my BR05 the same as yours Neil, this is a brand new model and was even worse than the BR45, trouble just going up the 2% grade, it also has a very annoying short between the tender and the Loco where the wires sometimes get bent.
I will try this weekend to superglue up the drive on the BR45 with some locktight and see what happens, I have been told that this certainly works for the Wien Liliput models and was a known problem, when done it should pull 20 or so wagons which would suit me fine. I think that I will not be buying Liliput ever again, however the SVT137 railcar that I have straight out of the box worked fine.

Hi Anthony,

When you consider that the SVT137 is always underload, if they had underpowered it, it would not have moved.

The 05 and 45 run when not pulling any thing so are not under load.

Ultimately it is very frustrating when you buy a new locomotive and it doesn't work properly.
