*** it sound like motor and not decoder if the loco simply runs out of steam - No setting removes power like that unless top volts are set very low.

This loco usually pulls fine... weak magnets, poorly assembled motor, badly seated brushes, weak brush springs come to mind - I've recently seen exactly this with two HO scale Athaern loco's, a challenger and a big boy, both of which could barely pull the skin off a rice pudding.

Both were fixed quite easily, one with new brushes and the other with new brush springs (both were nearly new, but the brushes on one were only 1mm long, the springs on the other had no "spring").

if you can get to the motor / drive train take the motor out and test it - I suspect that it will be the problem.

I'd forgotten about that one - the motor used isn't very voltage tolerant.

Neils was getting very hot which affected the power of the motor - the constant high voltage of his system was slowly cooking the motor, weakening motor brush springs and progressively weakening the magnet... We caught it in time to save the motor but we did have to replace springs and brushes.

The loco now works well but the long term fix was to drop rail voltage to a sensible level so other loco's etc wouldn't suffer the same fate.

What DCC system do you use? If its european, almost certainly it'll need track voltage dropping a little.
