LMS 1831 information help please

Hi all,

Recently i bought a chassis for the experimental diesel shunter LMS 1831 as pictured here .....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LMS_diesel_shunter_1831

the chassis is complete being made from brass scratch built but the body is plasticard templates with the intention it is to be made from brass sheet, as can be seen from this picture http://nick--orwin.photoblog.me.uk/p51034006.html the chassis needs the connecting rods adding but it runs well in both directions my main problem being conversion to DCC.
All i can find for reference on a google search is the wikipedia page and a photograph of 3 gents next to the loco, does anyone know of any other pictures or better still line drawings for this loco .

Many thanks

That's probably the easy bit !

Its probably going to be easier to remove all the wiring & any supression components such as chokes or capacitors. Make sure that both the motor brushes are completely isolated from the chassis.
Connect the black decoder wire to the pickups one side (usually the LH side in the normal direction of travel). Connect the red decoder wire to the other pick ups (it may improve the pick up if you add them to the center axel). Connect the grey decoder wire to the "LH" motor brush & the orange decoder wire to the other one. Insulate any other wires from the decoder if you do not need them.
Unless you require lighting or other fuctions I would suggest either a TCS or the Bachmann 3-function (which is a rebadged ESU) decoders - both good & resonably priced.

Hope this helps & good luck with the project.

***It's good to see someone being creative, so good luck with the project. Brians advice is spot on for the installation of DCC

The chassis is perhaps a little short in the wheelbase as the original has some space between wheels - if you look at an LMS Jinty you'll see what I mean - the Johnson 1F half cab 1377 class (the prototypes chassis was taken from one) is very similar in wheelbase to a jinty chassis. This is no big deal though - if you get the charachter of the body right the chassis will not be all that much of an issue and you'll end up with a very unusual N scale loco.

The rods should be reworked though - the diesel also has a jackshaft drive where the added peak in the rods is - it is connected to the apex of the "Triangle". I think you'll find better images in LMS locomotives by Jenkins & Essery and there is also a book dedicated to LMS diesels which I can't lay my hands on at the moment. Neither has drawings but both do have images.

Regards

Richard

Hi Brian Richard,

Many thanks for the advice i will keep you updated on the progress of this project, i'm looking forward to its completion for something different on the layout.

upnick.
Found and purchased a farish jinty on ebay for comparison to the body and see what goes it may be a better base to use for the body.

hi upnick I dont' know if you are still having problems with the dcc installation but I found this vid that may be of help
DCC installation I think one of my garden rail vids talks about installing decoder's in vintage engines. If you still need help I'll check it out for you.

if you need plans for the loco, you may want to try asking theses places if they have plans or anything else that may help you.

Hi steamrailuk,
Many thanks for the information ....... the NRM sounds a good option for research.

Hi steamrailuk,

Many thanks for the link helps the research more i have got a farish 3F dcc'd ready for the bodywork to be formed more in keeping with the loco than the scratchbuilt one i bought at the start of this project, the 3F needs some weight adding for the chassis to run well on DCC the same as some 08's i have found.

I was in York the other weekend but didnt get a chance to go to the NRM properly ............... a trip there combined with a visit to my sister would be good idea.

I was in between connections on my way back from Sunderland and only saw the bits and pieces part of the NRM where the royal trains exhibits are kept and a few steamers one 'Winston Churchill'

a full trip to the main hall would reveal what is there now.

dont recall seeing that bullied pacific when i was last there, only memorable locos i saw last time i was there was Green Arrow and City of Truro apart from the nrm's permanent collection.
Upnick have you had any luck building no.1831? would love to see it as I have an interest in unique diesels and electrics
