That's not really that suprising though is it? Say the shop keeper agreed and you collectively had a go at what is in effect 'damaging' the product. What if the weathering came off a bit, but not to your satisfaction, and you decided not to go through with the purchase?
The shop keeper wouldn't be happy, you wouldn't be happy, and the poor sod who eventually ended up with it wouldn't be happy. The shop keeper would be doubley unhappy when that poor sod returned the loco to the shop.
Totally agree with LMS on this one. Pristine or weathered, or weathered from pristine, but not pristine from weathered.
