Locomotive Display cabinet needed

13620 Views 33 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  TonyDaly
Hello all
I am looking for a display cabinet for my locomotives. Glass fronted, preferably able to display a dozen locos or so. Does anyone know where I can get such a thing? Or indeed does anyone have one for sale?
It is bad enough having lots of locomotoves I cannot run (because of the glacial pace of layout-contruction); it is even worse that I cannot see them.

I have two cabinets by Picture Pride Displays having visited their stand at a national model railway exhibition.

They come in a variety of sizes and colours and are air-tight to stop dust getting in.

I've had mine for several years now and am a very happy customer!

Black case, teak-framed glass door. One of the smaller ones - eight shelves, eight locos. Came to about £110 all-in, including delivery.

I cannot recommend this company too highly ... they said it would take three weeks to make my cabinet but it arrived within four days. Best of all, unlike so much these days, these cabinets come fully constructed - all you have to do is lay the glass shelves in and hang it on the wall.

they look like you can run trains in and out of them because their ends are open, possibly through a helix?

There is more on this topic on Norm's and my thread here on loco storage but most of the display systems are quite a bit more pricey

The Lidl cabinets.
There`s two different sizes available with discounts for buying two. I`ve got one of the larger floor standing ones (£56.99 - £110 for two) and there`s two things to note - there`s quite a gap around the doors so it needs to in a dust free as possible room. I wouldn`t recommend one for keeping well detailed steam locos in! My one will be for my diesels! Secondly, they`re really heavy1
I really struggled to get mine to the car then from the car to the upstairs room where I wanted it! Someone was buying two floor standing ones and had to get assistance from the store in the form of two assistants and a pump trolley!

Wow....so you must have queued all night! Our Lidl said only available from 17/12.
Many thanks for a very informative update...

I shall have to leave getting one until a less stretching time of the year. Up here in Geordieland I regret being forced to admit that wor high-spending lassies control the purse strings in the run up to Christmas.

The smaller Lidl cases are 2 for £55 and very good value. They build very easily - all the screw and specialist fixing holes are pre-drilled.
If only all flat pack furniture was as well designed and manufactured as these !!

An update on my floor standing cabinet!
Now finished but not installed. Will need screwing to the wall with the provided screws and plugs as it`s definately not safe free standing.
That`s going to be awkward as I have a skirting board so it will need to scaced away from the wall.
One good thing about it is that it`s lockable which would prevent tiny hands (paws?) opening the doors and poking around inside!
