If you use the search facility on this forum with "loft" as the subject, it should throw up a number of posts about building layouts in lofts, including advice on flooring, insulation and lighting, which you may find of use.

I add the flooring done and the lighting done so i ham doing the boards for my layout i had 2 boards done I ham doing 4 more boards now and 2 latter on.

Just to let you all now I just done all the 9 boards I ham putting the track on the boards I got E-Z Commmand Dynamis. I will run upto 8 Steam Locomotive on the layout . by the way im layout in the loft. when its is all done I will put on my pics web site.

By the sound of it you're making good progress but it might be worth putting some photos on the Forum as you progress so that other members can offer help and suggestions. Do you have a track plan ??

I have a loft layout and find it a very good place to be. Away from everyone. My main problem is heat build up from lighting and the sun on the roof, but in the winter this is very nice. Sounds like your going well.

i converted my loft its carpeted out and has a large strip light in centre so gr8 light ,also have velux window for ventelation and velux blind to keep sun out during day so keeps heat out too

both sides loft are borded with acces doors to get into lower internall eave space (storage) im looking at building a 12ft 8 layout with trains going into lower eave space too

What a shame, I grew up in Edgehill Road West Heath but sadly moved on.

I'm in Quinton, Birmingham and I have a loft layout.
Some of the following might be useful;
1/ Don't convert your loft too much or you will need planning permission and might create problems if you ever want to sell your house.
2/ Make all the baseboards portable even if you intend to lay the track uncut and all pinned down. It is much easier to dismantle in the even of any emergency and also to get the borads into and out of the loft.
3/ Leave slight gaps in the rails when slotted into the fishplates - this will allow for any expansion/contraction caused by rapid temperature change.
4/ Always keep some dust sheets over the layout when not in use (I use polythene sheets which I get from the drycleaners when they return your cleaned clothes).
5/ Keep the rolling stock in boxes/cabinets/storage units if you are keeping them in the loft.
6/ Make sure there are enough electrical power points in the loft and also that there is sufficient light - I have two bulbs and it's still a little dark.
7/ Make access to the loft easy - I started building the layout with only stepladder access at first and it was very inconvenient and would often stop me from 'playing trains' because of the hassle of getting in and out.

I too am building a loft layout. I have found one other problem that I hadn't previously encountered. Make sure your loft is damp-proof! I lost a load of buildings due to unexpected water ingress. I was only lucky I hadn't wired up at the time!

I do not do DCC I'm afraid just good old DC. The cost to me for chipping my locomotive stock would run to Hundreds of pounds!!!!
