Long coal train with a pair of Kato GE C44-9W's #9702 lead & #5767 she has a sound chip in but wth the 32 Kato & 7 Athearn Bethgons on the move on unballasted track its hard if not impossible to hear

Holy cow nick that is an impressive rake. I thought you had put the video recorder on repeat. lol.

I have the three parter by R T Watson from Continental Modeller (many years ago - pages don't carry dates and bodies of mags long gone, sorry) on Big Boys and the intro starts:

"The Russians have an old proverb, "There comes a point where quantity takes on a quality that is all it's own".

I've never forgotten that remark in context, and hold it true of US Railroading in general (yes, I know a little of short-line operations - and take great enjoyment from their modelled form too).
