I wouldn't worry spongey at least it's started an animated discussion. You should try the yank boards and see the flames you get if you wander off track.

Why would you mail order your train packs? Why wouldn't just go down to your local hobby shop and buy one. Is the UK turning out like the US where internet shopping is killing off the hobby shops in droves. I guess we'er lucky in Oz as the hobby shop is still a fun place visit even if it is a 500klm drive to get there.

QUOTE (cig1705 @ 4 Apr 2006, 06:22)Please can we get this thread back on track? Interesting though it may be, discussing Dapol and Parkside kits isn't exactly relevant to mail-order train packs, is it?

Sorry if that sounds harsh or anything, but ee by gum! OT Threads get on my nerves!

Over here since the dawn of time 1 or 2 catalogue companies in a bid to cash in on the hobby have done their own train sets or packs or sometimes loco's. Some are rare, some are rubbish, now they have settled for doing a loco and 3 coaches. usually at full whack price but still cheaper than buying seperate. Trouble is you can't always tell what you're getting for definite. Last years grey A4 came with the old type gresley coaches, no one knew for definite until they got hold of one.

QUOTE (cig1705 @ 3 Apr 2006, 21:12)May I offer a soution? How about one of each:

"Derby Royal- 1963"= 34088 (213 Sqn. ) + three Pullmans for B.R. steam.
"Royal Scot- 1930s"= Duchess of Athol + three Stanier coaches in Crimson Lake for pre-1948
Wessex trains" with Pink Cl. 31 plus 3 Wessex Mk. 2s for modern image.

That O.K.?

The ideas above are certainly ones for Hornby to consider in the future as i'm sure they will be at least one pack there that people given the choice would buy at least 1 of them. I think your suggestion for a Black 5 and Green mk2's should be added as well as looking at steam dreams railtour list this year most of them are with a Black 5 so this could be a popular seller.

It would be nice to see the 'Pink Train' in OO as i think with Hornby;s current standards it would look stunning. Afterall they are doing 31452 this year so all we need is the 5 mk2's (3 standards and 2 brakes) plus the other 31 and we have a complete train then - 3 coaches in the train pack and 2 sold seperatly incase people don't want the 31.

Received e-mail from SK today.

Alas, no gold WC or MN- if it were to be produced, he says it would cost more @RRP than our £175 estimate. Nothing saying Yes or No with regards to others (From April gag!), just "I'm sure all these packs will appear in the near future."

So- may I suggest to Mr. Kohler the revised "Something for everyone" list (Wessex Trains pink 31 + 1 BSO and 2 TSOs, 34088+ 3 Pullmans and Royal Scot train pack).

I think Hornby do occasionally produce more than 3 packs per year. If so, the MHR 45231 plus green Mk. 2s would go down a storm!

Kind Regards,

RM

I would personally welcome a Class 60 train pack with some stock. As previously mentioned about a Class 60 with 3 TEA Tankers. How about have this pack in a combination like Class 60 in Petroleum Sub-Sector Grey with 3 Green BP Tankers with the rear Tanker have a flashing tail lamp on the back ? Now here is another combination for the Class 60. How about we have a Class 60 which could be 60008 in its new EWS livery with 3 Intermodal Container Wagons. I have a small love for the Class 60 because I did grow up with them along with the Class 47, 56 and the Class 58's too. But moving away from locos. Now that the lima tooling is owned by Hornby - I think its about time they should introduce a HST pack in Intercity Swallow Livery using these powercars but how about adding head and tail lights to the ex-lima Class 43 powercars with a new driver cab interoir. Because not only would this boost the look and upgrade the long overdue revamp to the original Hornby HST125 - but it will probably be the best Hornby HST125 that could possibly ever be produced and it would knock the original Lima HST125's for six and back then - they were the best looking HST powercars at that time!

I'd agree that the lima hst cars are a lot better looking than the old hornby ones. I don't know why it is that the hornby ones look a bit fat in the face and the windscreen too small. Add to that the chin detailing is all but invisible. As for lighting I have a pair of Great western cars one has headlights the other doesn't and my newly acquired virgin ones either don't have in either or the one with isn't working. I can't see them reintroducing the swallow livery as it is out of date and the only out of date livery hornby have stuck by to the point where if you wanted one you'd have bought one by now is the virgin livery. OUt of date, done to death and not worth a carrot. Have a change for a while and do the XC one for a bit if you must persist. Or GNER and try to get the colour right unlike the 225 mallard set.

Agree with comments on the Hornby HST. Its totally PANTS!
Hornby's HST together with their awful class 37 and 47 diesel locos are way past thier sell by date and suitable only as toys and definately not models.
How do Hornby justify the £60 RRP price tag for their 37 and 47 locos? They have been around in their crude forms for donkey's years and have hardly seen any improvments in all that time. The price tag suggest that Hornby are marketing a 'model' and not a toy. If that is the case why don't Hornby drop these hideous toolings ASAP and introduce the ex-Lima ones?
If they must continue knocking out these crude old toys then they should drop the price and put them in a junior starter range. That is all they are fit for.
It is strange how 3 of some of the most prominent examples of traction on Braitains railways are some of the worst offerings Hornby have ever made. The fact they continue with these 'toys' with such a ridiculous RRP is unacceptable. Put them up against the superior Bachmann locos which are lightyears ahead but similarly priced and the Hornby offerings look like an even bigger joke than they already are. It is not just a matter that they have been overtaken by newer models - they never did look right in the first place. God knows what Hornby's designers were doing back then - probably tripping out on the choice of herbs for that era!!

I think the point of this thread has been somewhat missed.............it started off as an April fool joke and died a natural death shortly afterwards. However, I have to take issue with some of the comments, and suspect I won't be the only one!!

To take the classes mentioned: yes the Hornby, or should I say Tri-ang, class 37 is crude, but it's been around in one form or another for over 40 years. Not far short of the original machines, and don't forget in 1965 there wasn't a great deal of opposition as Hornby Dublo (Meccano) had just been purchased by Tri-ang. The Lima 37 in my opinion was not a great deal better. (the Hornby one actually coupled closer!) The class 47 was introduced in the early 70's in the "Silver Seal" series and was originally available in gloss two tone green, I had one of the first corporate blue ones in 1976 when I worked at the factory (and it was bought legitimately from the staff shop). The Lima one was marginally better, but not much, and that tooliing too is long past it's best.

As for the HST power cars I have had both and have found them both to be very similar in performance and looks, I feel we should be grateful we still have the power cars available and wouldn't be at all surprised to see a retooled version in 2007.

The second generation diesels have always been among my favourite locos, and as far as I am concerned no-one has yet maanaged to get the 47 to look like it should.

regards

John

With the improvements Hornby have made to the running gear and overall finish of these models over the years the current models offered are well ahead of the examples offered even 10 years ago.

It seems silly that Hornby should invest money into tooling for a new version of an existing model when the current versions still sell well and when there are gaping holes in their range elsewhere such as small and medium size steam locomotives and diesels for which they currently do not offer examples such as the Class 66.

Not everybody wants a loco with a lot of fragile detail. Familes with younger children for example.

And the older Hornby locos still run on R1 curved track which is fundemental to loco choice for an amazing number of railway modellers! Yes really!

Happy modelling

I think, Gary, that Hornby can't produce a class 66 anyway because Bachmann own the OO rights from EMD.

I suppose that Hornby haven't introduced the Lima versions because doing so would require extra work on Hornby's part - new motors/improved details et cetera. Given that Bachmann do 37s of both types and Heljan and Bachmann produce/have produced super detail class 47s, it isn't worth their while to do up the ex-Lima 37s and 47s and present them as locos for modellers when Hornby can get more mileage out of the 121/73/67 which are Lima's better models and are unopposed by better competition. As regards the HST, perhaps Hornby know something we don't...

... or, if nothing else, Hornby don't see the point in upgrading the Lima model when they are producing HSTs for collectors and the train-set market.

Of course if Hornby did produce a 66 then there would be complaints about duplications !

I seem to recall that Hronby mentioned the reson they did the 08 not long after Bachmann was it was part of the "Diesel History" and so needed to be included in their range.

I hope that Hornby do a 37,47 and HST next year but I doubt it. I think they will do them for the same reason as the 08 they formed the backbone of traction for over 30 years and can't be left out to long.

Back on Topic!

M&S are doing 3for2 on toys at the mo and this includes the Hornby Preimer boxset. works out at £155 per set if you can find 2 more people to buy them off you!!
