Jennings original post did say the advert contained a reference to the working lights and I am sure when I first read it the lights were mentioned. They are not now so I agree beware. The coach illustrated looks like the old version.
However if they did reduce them after Christmas it may still be a bargain for the loco alone.

Guess where I'll be on Boxing day!

The only thing is last year M & S had sold out of train sets so I bought a Starsky and Hutch Scalextric set instead.

Now I gave that away to a young nephew as a late Xmas present and you should have seen the look on his face!

How would it have been for you if you were five and a rich uncle suddenly gave you a big Scalextric set for Xmas?

I can still remember how it was for me when I was five (just)!

Happy modelling
Gary

PS no I am not a "rich" uncle but it felt like it that day!

QUOTE Reading your post I was all set to ask you for a loan until I read that last line!

Dennis, thats exactly the reason for my qualifying the position, because otherwise I knew that you would!

Be warned all - I looked inside one of the sets and the coaches are the OLD pullmans - i.e. no lighting. I contacted M&S to tell them that their website description was wrong, and this may be why it's been removed.

The clear warning is much appreciated!
I just LOVE those old Pullmans - their romantic aura is engraved on my soul.

Although I haven't yet seen a lighted one in the flesh, I have the strongest feeling that I would be completely unable to resist a set at bargain prices, preferably with an LNER loco. But the attraction of those wonderful saloon coaches could even overcome my loco bias.

Hello Everyone,

Even if these Pullmans are the old ones, methinks me shall be buying this if it comes down as low as the Evening Star (Mmmmm & S- £89 MN for £29+ coaches, track, controller)- You can always buy 5 of 'em for £150 or so, keep one, give one to little boy and flog 3 on eBay after six months for £180!!

After all, for the price of a super-detailed Gresley Teak coach, you could have some good ol' playin' trains!

Kind Regards and a Merry Christmas,

delivery is only £3.50 as well. They now describe it as a 3 piece set

could it be loco, tender and a carriage? Thats the trouble with big retailers they don't have a damn clue what they are writing about, argos are as bad, plus everything is at retail price.
The one that gets me is how can a train pack be priced at £130.00 in the Great Universal catalogue to which it is supposedly exclusive yet sell on ebay for considerably less

Well spongebob,

On eBay there are a couple of these sets "Doing the rounds", and they contain "Bibby Line" (Kinda stupid as this was the only loco of the class cut up by BR- Clan Line, Port Line, Canadian Pacific would've made sense- clearing out old locos and coaches and flogging them to M and S?) and 3 coaches, so no worries there.

Exclusive L/E Sets/Packs are all well and good, but they are, as you say, somewhat overpriced- the toy guys do better as they sell 'em cheaply (and you can get a set that will become a rarity for £40-£50 sometimes
)

Well, to my mind, it's a bargain. Hornby SR Pacifics that reach a price of £69 are classed on most websites as "Bargain! Buy now while stocks last!" Plus, the traditional express loco/3 coaches set goes, nowadays, for around £100- retailers still with 3 coach Flying Scotsman sets flog 'em for £90 and call it a bargain!

Seems that they've sold out, though (And I spent from 3 AM onwards trying to get it on their website- "Sorry, we're updating our site for the Christmas Day sale." It WAS Christmas Day! Ah, sigh!)

Now i have a dilemma. Do i see if it becomes available in the near future(unlikely) or do i go to my nearest store and machete my way through all the other sad tossers who have nowt better to do on boxing day(slim chance) or do i just find something else to buy instead?

Spongebob,

The chance of this ever re-appearing is slim-to-nil. Go, now! M&S sales have started.

However, don't get your hopes up. I've tried plenty of stores, ringing them up "Scuse, have you got a Hornby train set?" with a negative response.

If anyone has got a store that still has 'em, I suggest you tell us interested madmen!

An update for help- if anyone has an M&S still with 'em, yours truly would be interested!

I'm going to phone Head office and ask 'em if they know anywhere which might have 'em tomorrow.

UPDATE: Theys say that they have none left anywhere according to their stock-checkers. The Bay seems your best bet!
