I am a happy user of vista on my dell laptop. I am an engineer by profession but i am one of the few engineers that dosent like to fiddle with things too much if they are working nicely.
The only problem i had with vista is that it really dosent like solidworks. and autocad 2006 needs to be run through the compatibility wizard.
If i were to by a laptop i would go for vista again. i was a bit concerned when people started to trash vista after i had just sent £400 on a vista machine!! but many of their concerns i think are unfounded. it is a bit slower but the machines you buy with it on are very fast these days anyway so i dont think you will notice it.
compatability can be a problem so check your software and check on the net first. there may be some patches you need to download FIRST.
