Some of you may have read that My Brother and I are building layout to take out and show off.
Well we've been working on it over the last couple of days so here are some pictures of the work that we've done

Train Vehicle Wood Rolling stock Rolling
That's the back of the retail park against the backscene so all you'll see there is the stores being resupplied. There is from left to right, a fast food outlet, probably Pizza Hut subject to being able to get logos for it. the big arc roofed building is Tesco Extra (Their taking over the model world as well) then five well known brand stores to be decided, stores like PC World, Comet, MFI and Toys 'R' Us.
The tracks in front of this retail park will have the station built around them, so no pressure to top the low relief retail park then.

Any way I'm sure Brian will be along soon to fill you in on a bit more.
Andii Sewell

PS that's Bro Sewell standing behind the layout.

Not sure he'll thank you for that - but I do appreciate his musical taste, I first saw Maiden in Margate, playing a pub gig in 1979.

Layouts looking good though.

He sent me a PM to that effect, we find a bit of Maiden really helps the modelling along nicely. Though now we've been relegated to the garage by Mrs Bro Sewell and we're back to using a CD player it seems we have to change the album all the time, was so much better in the house when we could conect my laptop to his Hi-Fi and play the contents of the hardrive, although that did mean the other side of midnight arrived all to often without us noticing.

I first saw them at Donnington '92 and last saw them at the NEC last year where they played AMOLAD all the way through in order, a great night.

Been up to Bro_Sewells today and the layout has been in fine voice again. His excellent work in building the bridge at the right hand end of the scene and the houses on the top of the hill left Milldale crying out for some colour to be applied to the white polystyrene. So we complied with the layouts request and it looks great as a base colour ready for the grass, bushes, trees etc. to be planted.

Now it's after the platforms to be built, there's just no satisfying this layout.
It's also after an extention being built so we can run out into the countryside, as if 30' isn't long enough.

It really is amazing what a coat of paint can do to even basic unfinished scenery. Coming along nicely now. Keep us posted.

It definitely isn't

The signal box and gasometer look good. Where did they come from?

Hi dwb, the signal box is one of two that were picked up at swapmeets. They were kits but I,m sorry I couldn't tell you whos as they were assembled when we got them. As for the gasometer, well that is all Brians work, the basic dememtions for the base were taken from a chocolate biscuit selection tin and the framing built from Evergreen plastic stripping till it looked right. The actual gas container part has yet to be builtdue to no ideas coming at the moment on how best to simulete the domed top and curve from the side to the top, this isn't a problem yet with so much other stuff to be getting on with.
Glad you think that 30' isn't long enough and after yesterdays platform building session it's starting to look more and more likely that the layout will get another 16' before we take it out which will make it 46' long. Why another 16' you may ask, because of the way the baseboards are constructed and stored/transported. Our boards are 4' square with a 4' wide 3'deep scenic section then the backscene which hides the integral 12" wide 6 track fiddle yard. The boards are stored/transported by means of standing 4 boards on edge 18" apart and bolting a 6' frame each side with wheels on one edge. With 4 boards to a frame at 4' each it's perfectly logical to go for 16' as the first stage of extention.
Anyway here's the latest from milldale, platform edges in place and tops loose laid

Thanks for the information. The gasometer looks very good in the photo. Maybe a plastic cake container might provide a dome shape?

As mentioned else where we've been ballasting in the station. this wasn't set when I had to leave to come home (work getting in the way again) so Brian has forwarded me a couple of pictures. This is only the second time we've had a go at this part of the hobby, The first being further along the line. I have to say that these pictures look great and I couldn't be happier at how the ballasting is coming out

Just need to finish then get some muck on the groung

Good point. This section is a "new laid" length and we wanted to try and convey this with different shades of rust, hopefully it will tone down a bit when we weather the track.

Been up to Bros today and listened to the station, here's what it's told me so far
One side of the island platform building marked up

Cut out

Offered up on the platform

assembly of the building shell

offering up of the basic shell

The large area above the windows is where the canopy will attatch to the building, here are some stats on the size of this building.
When the other half is built it will be 670mm long (it has to be in two parts as it stradles a board join) it's 45mm wide and 40mm to the base of the canopy, 60mm to the tops of the side walls and 78mm to the top of the roof. It will have full length canopies both sides and have a similar length building on the other platform, though this will be grander as befitting it's status as the main station building.
Should make good progress on the station over the next few weeks as it is realy talking to me at the moment, you could say I'm in the "groove"

We managed to get some days off at the same time this week so I've been up to Brians to work on Milldale.
This session we finished the basic shells for the station buildings

and made a start on cladding them with embossed platicard from the Slaters range

What we've set out to replicate is a station that has been expended at some time in the past, so the main station building has been built with a facing of Portland cement where as the rest of the buildings will be in plain brick finish. It's hard to see how this will look at this early stage of detailing but we're hopeful

So this is where we're up to at the moment

Both sets of buildings will have canopies hanging of them that run the full length of the building, will be of a Midland style with 29 peaks each side and be a total length of just over a meter. The canopies will stick out about 53mm (13'3") from the building and just overhang the platform lip.
