Hi, I'm interested in adding a war time feel to my GWR layout, any one have experiance, For example a war time train with Sherman tanks on it, how many would a train pull? Scenary photos of layouts etc.? Photos of real stuff?

Many thanks

Photography and note-taking during the war was obviously much reduced both due to the lack of time, materials and reluctance to be thought a spy! Also articles in journals were subject to censorship for security reasons.

However, several books have been published on the subject.
"Britain's Railways at War" by Alan Earnshaw, published 1995 by Atlantic Transport Publications ISBN 0 906899 48 6
(Covers WW1 and WW2 and is mostly photographs with text. This is a republication of two smaller books first published in 1989.)
Harold Gasson's books 'Firing Days', 'Footplate Days' and 'Nostalgic Days' (published by OPC) contain some personal recollections about working during WW2.
"Britain's Railways at War 1939-45", by O S Nock, published by Ian Allan 1971

There is also a booklet about the railways published during the war in a series about various aspects of military and civilian works - I've seen this a number of times on stalls at exhibitions or in second-hand bookshops but don't have my own copy.
Hope this is of help,
