While perusing the Auscision models website today I came across this series of photos by Graham Cotteralll. I can't show them here as I do not have written permission from him but here is a link to what is an impressive photographic collection of modern Australian diesel locos at work. These are pretty good photos and well worth a look if your into modern diesels.
There pictures of the Ghan, Indian pacific and some serious freight trains.

i am not sure what you call them down there but the chinese call them NJ2's. i knew there were some in australia but i had never seen any decent pictures untill now. the chinese had some specially built (or were they just modified on the cheap?? i have evidence for both) to cope with the high altitude on the new tibet line.
Peter, which ones are you refering to? I can see exNSWGR 44class , 422's, 82's, NR's, 90's and some ex Vic rail locos, G's, N's and T's. Some Iron Ore lines locos from the west BHP Alco 630's, C44-7 and -8, GE Dash 9's, GE AC4400 and AC 6000 but no Chinese built locos.

actually now i look at it again i think i was mistaken. the chinese loco's were not built in china they were american loco's that were imported.

Pete, the ones you are looking at are ex vic rail "G" class, similar to a NSWGR 80 class. They date back to about 1980 I think. Built by Gonnians with I think Alco prime movers. I thought they were ex NSW 422's but they look more like "G's. The NJ isa cur down "G" and I think designed to run in pairs.
You could also have a look at this site where some of the heaviest trains, 15,000 to 20,000 tonnes, are moved. http://www.railways.pilbara.net.au/
Mainly US designs straight off the shelf. They can running them in the north west as the loading gauge is not as restrictive as it is on ex government lines.
Thats an interesting link Ozzie. I'm surprised that no-one has commissioned an Aussie version of the Dash 9. It looks pretty good. A scale length train might be tricky if they are 3.5 km long though.
Neil, BLI do a model of the GE AC6000 in BHP Iron ore colours and Athearn were reputed to be doing a Hammersly Iron and Robe River dash 9 or AC4400. And yes most train lengths are in the 3Km long range. I think the record was 4km and 32,000tonnes.
