Motorail vehicles

Hi Guys,

I need some help and can't find the details I need in my own referece library.

I am going to be running a Motorail servive on my layout but am having trouble finding any details of the flat wagons (carflats?) used to carry the cars. I know they were often built on redundant coach underframes, but that is all. I particularily need details of the loading ramps and decking arrangements.

Any help gratefully received.

Regards

John

That sounds interesting.

Why not make it a working system. Use the Faller Car System. They do RORO vehicles for working operation.
Triang did car-carrying with their Minic Motorway system. They used an end-loading bay with approach ramp and a bogie wagon fitted with the Minic slot; this was electrified when the wagon was pushed up against the ramp. I believe this was how the original BR system worked - flat trucks with end loading and low guardrails along the edges - but I cannot find any pictures at present. I'll let you know if I do find anything.

I presume this was a carry over from the CCVs used by the pre-nationalisation companies and the pre-grouping companies before that.

It's interesting - the private companies used covered vehicles and BR went back to open flat trucks as steam locos were removed. Eventually the spread of motorways lead to a reduction in Moto-rail services until it was limited to a small amount carried in vans attached to sleeper trains for Scotland. (Oxford Companion to British Railway History)
Kensington Olympia became the London centre for Moto-Rail traffic, so it may be worth looking at books which give information on that station.

The only motorail service I ever saw in the 1980s was the Euston - Stirling :
1M69 Stirling - Euston
1S01 Euston - Stirling
http://dave32b.fotopic.net/p29951395.html
This comprised about 6 or 7 First Class Mark 1 coaches branded in raspberry ripple "InterCity Motorail" and a further 10 to 12 YXV or FVX carflats

You will note that the train was designated as vacuumed braked, and so was only ever hauled by Class 81, 85, or 86

The loading points at each terminal are nothing more than two metal plates hinged together
Each wagon then has a further single hinged plate, which is lowered during use and raised during transport

The carflats were then withdrawn and the dual braked NXX GUVs were then used

the current ones use converted BR mk 1 coaches. the conversion kit is available through model rail magazine.
They also did a couple of features on it. sorry i dont have my book shelf to hand but from memory they were fairly early for model rail.

Thanks for all the help guys,

Doug, I don't think I'll have the space to do a terminal, but its a thought for the future!!

John, the minic car carrier was crude in the extreme as it could, if i remember correctly, only carry one car, the prototype I believe carried four. The ramp at Dover was, I know, an old Maunsell underframe. This was cut up in about 1998, I stoll have one of the axlebox covers.

Further info on these vehicles will be gratefully received.

The old catalogue I've got, and Pat Hammond's history of Triang, show the wagon was long enough for two cars - but quite how you got two cars on without driving one off the far end ....!

Hi Folks Does anyone have eny evidence of 57' LMS carflats actually being used for the branded Motorail services in blue with the large boards saying "Motorail" on the sides. I can only find evidence of BR Mk 1 underframe versions.
I think that I have recently seen that Oxford Rail are doing some carflats of some sort - no idea if these would be appropriate.
Motorail vehicles were also used on the Royal Highlander, Euston - Inverness, and on what I think was called the Highland Chieftan from Edinburgh to Euston.

I had my car of each of those services in about 1986 ?

Covered wagons/coaches, you left your car in a dock at Euston for it to be loaded and then shunted onto the train, back or front from Euston I am not sure, but probably the front as that part went to Inverness, the rear portion to Fort William ? At Edinburgh the Motorail vehicles were on the rear and shunted into the unloading dock on arrival in Euston.

It cost £25 each way, and when we went I was on a staff pass so went for free and they were doing 2 for 1 on the sleepers, another £25 for three of us. What value.
Carflats were used on the Western for Motorail at the start, but as the cars were in the elements they suffered all sorts of damage, windows smashed, bonnets and boots blown open, and lineside vandalism. A bit of a disaster.

The same sort of wagons that were used on the Morris Cowley - Bathgate car trains which suffered the same sort of fate, and subject to pilfering when held in loops and sidings en route.
