MMMMMMMM this sounds a lot like my class 37 from bachmann after rebodying br green the gears it sounds under slight acceleration even scream, like the worm whizzing on a stripped out gear, after close inspection i cant find anything wrong with the gears.
So off to my local railway retailer with it for return.

Very true Brian if the model doesnt run out of the box it should go back .... a Gaugmaster here on DC does the trick in the same manner, i have heard the gearing beds in after a length of time running.
Therefore with s/h locos this should be done already ready for decoder fitting reminds me i have a few locos that need running in
