My Prolapsed back !

As you may notice I have written quite a few posts lately, and they seem to be getting earlier!!

A few years ago after I couldn't walk, had the MRI scan which confirmed that I had a prolapsed disk, what joy!
Went to physio and after 12weeks seemed to be on the mend, until the last 5 weeks when it's been getting steadily worse.

Went to the GP's last week...no records of my previous back treatments, so hey ho, another load of brufen 400mg and pain killers that don't actually work.
Oh and a recommendation that I change my job!

Last Wednesday night was the crippler though, couldn't walk at all had to crawl around the house, which wasn't good.
Asked the Doc for some stronger tablets but I need to go and see him, the fact I couldn't actually walk made him just write out a prescription for my wife to collect, for the Diazepam...which don't seem to do anything!

So far every morning since, I've been waking up at between 3.30 and 4.00 as the pain down my left leg is so intense!
My new bed is on the front room floor on a quilt!
I wonder if SWMBO will let me start building a layout in here, I can just see her response now

Have now booked into to see a consultant, thank my work for giving me private health care!!
So we shall see what happens next week after he's had a look and no doubt another MRI scan....not alot of room in them things!

So a very early good morning to you all!
Lets see what the next installment is?

Cheers

Hi Ian,

Sorry to hear about you back problems - all the best for the next stage of treatment. Lets hope its better than what you seemed to have been getting so far. I get the odd bout of lumbago & that's bad enough.

I don't often check post times, some of mine probably seem a little strange as I often work "antisocial" hours.
Hope your feeling better soon, we all like the speed you do things, keeps us well fed with new thing to read

Good luck with the further treatments

Brian

Did you consider going to a chiropractor as well as a physio? Sometimes they're able to get things back properly, and the physio then helps get strength back. Just a thought.

Thanks for all the comments guys,

Yep, saw an Osteopath for almost a year, then a Chiropractor.
I then installed a new motor/gearbox on one of our machines and a few days later couldn't actually move at all, which was very frightening!

Thats when I went to see a consultant the first time round. I had the MRI scan which he explained to me about my disc then lost the scan, so going to a different consultant now, and will go through it all again!

I don't care I just need it sorted, this is just a plain nightmare!

I have panels to cut out and layouts to finish, which is a big problem when I can't put much weight on my left leg for more than 5 mins, otherwise I drop like a sack of spuds!

Thanks for the concern guys will keep you all posted.

Hi Ian,

I feel sure that sooner rather than later you'll be up and about and back to normal. The only thing I have had of a similar nature is a trapped sciatic nerve - that hurt.

I have that problem but it's down to a bad attack of
seagulls

All the best

***Hi Ian, I really do sympathise a lot with you.

My dear Susie has exactly your problem - I spent two years being woken up every night as she couldn't help screaming in her sleep as she rolled over.... So I do appreciate how painful it must be!

She has had an op a year or so ago and while its (a) a painful thing to do and (
not 100% perfect it is much, much better and she can now sleep and enjoy life almost as well as she did before... In particular her leg pain (She called it "fire leg") went totally after the op and has only been back for a short time once since the op.

She loves gardening and can't help herself so every now and again she still ends up very sore.... the only things that help are acupuncture and anti-infammatories - a Cortisone injection in the spine does wonders too but these have to be limted to one per year I think!

Look after yourself, watch the chiropractor (they seemed do do more harm than good with Susies problem) and push for some action.... Doctors can be so bloomin slow to act sometimes!

***Hi Ian, I really do sympathise a lot with you.
I am just recovering from an op to insert a bone graft and to release trapped nerves. The op was 2 months ago and I was in the NHS queue for 15 months. I am now free of pain as the last gent said his wife was. BUT my modelling time is restricted to about two consuecitive hours a day ! I cannot complain because anything is better than what went before. Push and push and push for a result....that is the only way....BE PUSHY...make yourself unpopular and then you reach the magic kingdom. I think you probably need a bone fusion!?/
Good luck
Phil
Sorry to hear about your back Ian. Hope you get things sorted out.
Hi all,

Well had the MRI scan last week and the nurse who was operating it did say I must have been on very strong pain killers after she had done the scan!

I asked why and her reply sort of says it all!

"in my opinion it looks like a very large slipped disc"

Well, as I imagine she has seen many being the MRI operator, I would guess she'd know!
So on Monday 30th I shall see the consultant again, looks to me like an operation is on the cards for the disc to be removed, what joy!

Will keep you informed.

Lets hope it sorts it out!

Cheers

Words don't quite do it do they? So "Oh dear" will do as well.

I guess there's a kind of inverted (?) pride in knowing that you have actually got something really bad and that all that pain and difficulty is at the top end of the scale.

Best of luck with the consultant.

Been through all of that, I've even been carried out of a physiotherapists on a stretcher, after manipulation failed to work.
I had two discectomy's which failed, followed by two fusions which have been highly successful. This enabled me to return to competitive Golf. 25 years later they are still giving me good service. Yes I get the odd period of back pain but then so do most people. I find reflexoligy gives me the most relief, my advise is stay away from Chiropractors as they often over work stained disc's and joints. I don't lift anything over 5kg if I can avoid it, I'm careful how I lift things, and I except that my back will never ever be supple again.
I have two Herman Miller Orthopedic chairs, one for my computer and one for my work bench and these provide almost 100% back support they were expensive but completely worth the money. Good luck with your treatment, and consider reflexoligy it works for me.

Totally second that, very good luck with the op. Knowing that it's a slipped disc, a chiropractor would likely make things worse.

Thanks for all the kind words!

I've never been to a Chiropractor, I've always believed that the quick sharp movements they do, can't be good.

MMAD, never even thought about reflexology!! Sounds good to me!

Mmmm,

Well it's confirmed, a massive slipped disc.
From the scans it looks like it's pressing the spinal cord flat, no wonder my leg hurts!

Operation booked for Sat 12th July , or maybe sooner have to wait for confirmation now.

Hey ho something I'm not really looking forward to, but if the pain goes that will be good news!

I will have to save my Hornby magazine and not read it until I have the op as I need to stay in for what could be upto 5 days after!
Now that is going to be boring!!

Cheers

Best of luck, Ian.
Hope all goes well.

Thanks guys,

I just want the pain to go from both legs now!
The left is still worse, but the whole lot is getting worse.

All I can say is thanks to my company for providing private healthcare insurance!!
I wouldn't have seen the consultant yet if it had been NHS.
If the surgery goes ahead on the 12th I should be back at work in August, which is a total of 12 weeks off work!!
Luckily again I get full pay for.....12 weeks.

You just don't realise any of this until you need it!!

Will keep you all posted.

Cheers

All the very best Ian - hope it all turns out well.
Hi all!
Thanks for all the kind comments.

I had the operation on Saturday, got there at 07.15 went down at 12.30..the wait was not good.

All has gone well, he removed two very large fragments of disc that were pressing on my nerves.
My calf is tight still but no pain, and my foot is still very sensitive and also has pins and needles as well, this should all go away but will take time for everything to heal.
The worst part was when they removed the drain, which is just a tube sticking out......OUCH!!

So good news, just need to take it easy....wear a corset type of thing to hold my back straight everytime I standup or walk about.
At least it's been done now and I can now start to recover.

Cheers
