new - 2 silly questions

Hello everyone,

Firstly thanks to all those who post here - I have been reading a while and it has helped me a lot. I am just about to commence building an n-guage layout. I had one when I was young (my dad is a keen modeller) but now having a young family and my own place I am starting my own layout! My rolling stock is a motley crue of models collected over years - favourite being a minitrix 9f and a minitrix Hermes warship - both of which were excellent runners. I have a class 50 farish I like too but it went back to the old factory in Poole many times (used to holiday there!) so not optimistic it will still run! I have a few very basic questions (sorry not very complex queries!)

1: Should I do anything to my locos before trying them out? Some may not have run in 10 years maybe more.
2: In the Farish catalogue I do not understand the letters - TRFM,TSO,TSOD,TGS,TF,TSOE etc. I want to buy some coaches to match the HST GNER I have but not sure what all the acroynms mean.
3: I picked up some lifelike? US outline stock when previously on holiday in Canada - how can I add to this and get a catalogue? I cant easily find a good importer in UK (I am based in Belfast so not easy to travel and thus need an online retailer)
4: PECO track, pins etc. I am going to need a lot! Any tips on best webshops for bulk purchases of track, points etc.

Thanks in advance!

Hi & welcome to MRF,

Your locomotives, having being stored for some time would benefit from a service before use. It's likely that any lunbricants have dried up. Have a look through previous posts about service/lubrication, but whatever you do (IMHO) steer clear of WD40, 3 in 1 & electrolube.

Sorry I can't help with the other questions though - enjoy the hobby & the forum.

On the GNER coaching question:

The GNER HSTs have now passed to National Express East Coast but still run in broadly the same formations though there will have been some minor changes since GNER ceased to operate.

The codes denote the type of coach. The most relevant to you are TS=trailer standard class, TGS=Trailer Guards Standard, TF=trailer first class, TRBF=Trailer Restaurant Buffet First. Full list of types and running numbers on the link below - the ones coded NX are part of the ex-GNER HST fleet.

http://www.thejunction.org.uk/ click on Fleet Lists, Coaching Stock, Mark 3 HST Vehicles.

All the HSTs use Mark 3 stock. Some of the codes you post relate to Mark 4 stock, which only runs in the electric sets (usually with a Class 91). Below is a link to the actual formations as noted recently:

http://www.thejunction.org.uk/form_gner_hst.shtml

Generally the formation is Power Car - TF - TF - TRBF - TS - TS - TS - TS - TS - TGS - Power car. First Class normally at the London end. If you don't have space (or money!) for a formation of this length you could omit one or more TSs or if really pushed one of the TFs.
