A DfT press release has just appeared.
Non-stop London-Gatwick trains will continue, but some trains will extend to/from Brighton in the peak period. An unspecified number of 442s will be brought back into service so this can happen.
Southern will get 48 new Electrostar vehicles (12 units presumably) , allowing them to transfer the same number of 319 vehicles to the Thameslink route. FCC will then be able to run all peak trains as 8-car. This is part of the 1000 new carriages announced a couple of weeks back.
