New Garage Layout

I like many decided one day that I was finally going to build that layout I had been telling my son I was going to build for many years.... we did have a very small "Train Set" on a board at the last house we lived in but space was very tight so the layout was quite small. We moved house 10 years ago and as this house had a double garage 18ft x 18ft we always intended to build something in there so 8 years later we FINALLY decided it was time to crack on but buy this time the garage had become a storage unit rather than a garage ..... like so many others
so we cleared a space in the centre of the garage...

A few months passed and a bit more clearing out and and some white paint on the walls we ended up with this...

A 16ft x 8ft layout based on one of the layouts in an old Hornby track plans book now while this was a fine layout the issue for me was having to crawl under the board to get to the centre of the layout ( I have pins in my spine and sometimes this is not always easy to do
) but as time passed I also cleared out more and more of the " you never know when you might need that pile of C**P " and this then started me thing that I should make the most of the garage space I have and create a section that allows me to walk into the layout rather than crawl under it.... so this takes me to the end of my base board journey as I have now finally built the correct base board for me and this is around the outer edge of the garage wall and its 18ft x 17ft x 3ft

I have also made this higher than the old layout as this makes it much easer to work on... now I know there are some out there that will say 3ft deep is to deep for the base board but the track will not be 3 feet away from the edge this is 3ft deep to allow me to develop scenery on the wall edge of the layout and will be built up first... well that's the plan in my head anyway

Now for control...

I have been using the Bachmann Dynamis Pro system with 5 receivers for almost 2 years and I find this to be more than adequate for my needs I have mounted it on the ceiling of the garage in a star configuration and this works really well this puts me at around 5 feet away from a receiver at any one time.

I have been using the Bachmann Dynamis Pro system with 5 receivers for almost 2 years and I find this to be more than adequate for my needs I have mounted it on the ceiling of the garage in a star configuration and this works really well this puts me at around 5/6 feet away from a receiver at any one time and I have been using this system being much further away from the base unit/receivers this without any issues.

This all gives me 4 areas now to work on and to date these will be a TMD area 10ft x 3 ft a Station area 12ft x 3ft a container yard 9ft x 3ft and a forth area 8ft x 3ft that I'm not quite sure what to do with yet....

Sorry for the long post but its been a while the links below are the link to my first layout and a link to my test track.

Hi Guy,

I will do one as soon as I have completed my track work ...... not much more to do now so should be able to do one in the next few weeks.

Nothing really to post about this week sorry ..... I have been connecting dcc bus droppers and adding detailing to a few loco's.

I have started to look at signals and I'm starting to like the look of the Traintronics ones ....

Hi Anthony,

Have just had a very enjoyable read / look through of your full thread, really great layout you are building there, & has already been said many times before, but no harm in saying it again, those long sweeping curves look great. Your track laying skills are also more than worth a mention, even with the "lots going on behind the scenes" foot note LOL !

Great layout, have not as yet looked at the videos, thats a pleasure for next time. Will look forward to watching things progress - top job, well done.

Cheers,

Norm
Hi Norm, thanks for the feedback ...... Not getting to spend any time in the garage ATM as work keeps getting in the way :-( I still have a bit of track work to complete so I'm hoping to get that done this weekend and then it's down to starting on the scenery in the container yard as that's where I'm starting from .....
Don't you just hate that life and work getting in the way of your modelling. Happens to me all the time. Plan to get some modelling jobs done then the wife plans something or work gets busy grrrrr.

Keep up the good work looking good can't wait to see the layout scenics develop

Hi Anthony,

Like the look of those loco's, all appear like they have seen some action - great job.

Looks like you are another with a lot of retaining wall work / detailing infront of you; seems to be the in thing with a lot of members on here at the moment - perhaps sponsership by the mile should be thought about, or at least by the No of sore fingers LOL ! But well worth it in the end eh. As stated in another thread "Little & Often" (by dwb I seem to think) - How True !

Keep up the good work (* Dont know where DT was looking eh or must have been from the bottom of those Cliffs LOL !).

Cheers,

Norm

Thanks Ste... I have to say that adding the detailing parts is not as easy as it should be or my fingers are getting bigger and bigger as I get older lol.

I have loaded a small movie of my testing of the 2 outer lines with my Testing Pendolieno and a Hornby FGW Class 43..

Some nice looking progress. I also like the owrk you have done on your locos. I know what you mean about the droppers for the DCC as well!

Evening Anthony,

Managed to take a look at a couple of the test train videos - the smooth running & "train lengths" look fantastic - well done. Dont envey the platform builds to receive those tho' LOL !

Keep up the good work, Cheers,

Norm
Thanks Norm...

I have most of my platforms cut to size, I'm useing 18mm mdf and the smalst one is 11 ft with a few at almost 14ft for the 390's i will be adding peco platform edging to the platforms ......

my main problem is I only have one pair of hands

Looking at you train lengths, it appears that your layout is going to be huge! Any idea how many feet of track you've laid so far? Its looking very good indeed! I now have one train that is around 9 ft long, but anything longer looks ridiculous on my layout! Look forward to seeing your scenery progress!
