Noisy Class 50 - Can Anyone Help?

2361 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Rayden500
Loving my Hornby Class 50. Brilliant with SWD sound chip. But there is a screeching noise at anything other than minimal speed and this is drowning out the sound chip! Seems to be coming from No 1 end bogie? Tried lubricating with a good oil, as per Hornby Instructions. Made no difference. Noise similar to the old 80s Hornby Ringfield screeching. Anyone had a similar problem? Any suggestions? Don't want to have to withdraw the loco as per BR! Many thanks.... John

If it is anything like my Hornby 08, this could be a tight brass bearing on the top of the bogie gear tower, for the steel shaft carrying the worm. On my 08 these made the loudest noise I have ever heard from an OO loco, like a small girl screaming. Eliminated the problem by lubricating the offending bearings with 'brasso' to give a little more clearance, flushing out carefully afterwards once I judged there was sufficient slack.

A good test if what I have described fits with your experience: to see if it is a tight bearing, run the loco with the top off until the screaming starts. Is a bearing hot? (On the 08 one of them got hot enough to blister my fingertip.) If you have a suitable plastics compatible aerosol spray lubricant (I use GT85) apply this to the suspect location while running and making the noise. If this is the problem and you hit the right spot the cold spray will kill the noise instantly, and the noise will resume as the fluid component of the lube evaporates off, after a minute or thereabouts.

I had a screaming with a class 37 farish on one bogie from new and ran it in well for about on a track varying the speed at intervals now it runs better than ever and silent compared, i cant comment on yours as i dont do OO locos but it is a good idea to run in locos for an hour each way to settle the gearing, i do it on my loco tester.
Hello there.
My NSE class 50 (50002) also made a very high pitched and annoying screeching noise. I found after removing the body that the fan was either loose or was scraping across the housing itself. Be worth looking at that to cross it off the list.

Cheers
