I have an old diesel railcar and am repairing it appears to have what I think could be a capacitor going to the lights it's green with a black stripe going round one end. Anybody know just what it is for and which way round it should go thanks in advance for any help you can give

If it is in line in a single wire to the lights, that will be a diode, that will restrict the light to operating only when it is at the leading end. You can install it correctly by trial when the motor is running, so that the light is consistent with the movement.
Thanks for that I thought it might be but seems to be on in either direction may need replacing
