So at last, I went for the plunge, and here is what I got....

I shall keep you up to date with pictures and stages, though I have yet to order the wheels and pickups from Slaters.

Billion dollar question is, which one do I build first.....??

Hello,

Here is how far I got today. I would have got a lot further but beer calls.

Really enjoying the kit so far and going together very easily. There is a bend on the next bit for the bunker that might cause some headaches, but I shall worry about that tomorrow. I shall be needing the wheels and pickups before I get them at this rate I think.

Hi Alastair, its no problem at all honestly haha...

This kit, yes it is a C14 I think, but it definitely doesn't have inside cylinders, and so far as I know there isn't a kit available for outside cylinders, though I am sure for someone far far more experienced than myself it really wouldn't be any problem to adapt at all.

In fact, whilst I have been building this kit so far, I have been thinking about what could be done with these oh so simple kits in terms of a bit of bashing and scratch building... Outside cylinders, outside frame, possibly even a mallet type engine with a couple of kits and scratch built bunkers and tanks...

Thanks Paul, but I still insist that I am not experienced... The other two wagons really are all i have built. That and around 8 plastic wagons. Can't wait till next week to get some more work done on it, order the wheels, get them on, and pull some of the many wagons that I have built so far. I think I have come to the conclusion that I am definitely a rolling stock fanatic rather than layouts, though maybe that's just because I haven't got the space (or at least the permission) to build what I would like.

I am still hoping to have a rake of brass running in on the test track at the kettering show. Hopefully the die-hard modelers wont mind my rather mixed rake of unpainted stock.

Will post again soon.

Progress so far...

I guess about 15 hours. Not looking forward to soldering the white metal chimney and dome on that's for sure. I left the windows open for the footplate crew. I think it might get a little too hot in that tiny cab otherwise.

I do reckon though if I'd had the wheels and pickups from slaters to hand, this could possibly be a weekend project.

Hi Mike,

Thankyou for your reply, but I have already soldered the chimney on, and I must say with more success than I was expecting. Now the solder has been cleaned up, it looks really rather good... I shall post pictures in a bit..

The handrails have now gone on too. Roll on tomorrow when my slaters order arrives. I should have the kit finished (though unpainted obviously) by tomorrow evening.

Could definitely be built in a spare long weekend. Then its time for the 6 wheel coach... Arghh, the tumblehome...!!

Some pictures of the finished connoisseur kits... This is the rake that I am hoping to run at the Kettering this weekend.

C14 complete with spare chains and fire irons on top of the tanks....

The two most recent kits built. Both are connoisseur kits.

Hope they meet with your approval.

Hi Britho,

These kits really aren't difficult to build at all. I had very little, if no experience of soldering at all before starting the first of the above pictured kits. The loco was built in 4 days, and ran perfectly first time, and only the 3rd proper kit i had ever built in brass, and that is testament to a well thought out and designed kit.

If you can solder two bits of scrap brass together with a bit of flux, some 145 solder, and a 40w iron, you CAN build the above...

Just try one out... you might like it.

Regards,

Jonathan.

Well I was at the Kettering show today, hoping that I would be walking out with some big boxes, but no one wanted my money, or at least they didn't have card machines with them, which was rather annoying... and those that did take cards, had run out of kits... I think there is a link there somewhere..

I think my next kit though is going to be a David Andrews 42xx in Scale7. Got signed up to the society today, and look forward to what I can order from the stores sheet.

Will keep you all posted..
