Jonathan, you do not need to solder the white metal, I generally drill a small hole in the white metal and use a self tapper to fix from inside by drilling a hole in the bottom of the boiler to allow a small screw driver blade to past through. The alternative is to use araldite, the first loco I made was done this way and is still in service 35 years later, but stuff I've fixed with super glue has fallen off after about two years.

My C14 has outside valve gear made from steel banding that you get on brick packs. The cylinders are lumps of cast iron filed to shape with the ends turned in a 4 jaw on the lathe. I posted pictures on the rmweb some time ago so not sure if they are still accessable. Not sure how you post pictures on this site.
