yes you should use etching primer unless the model is laquered. the bachmann O gauge stuff for example is laquered to make it look all sparkly when you first open it. you can remove it but its a pain in the neck so i have done a model just using a good undercoat over the laquer.

thanks ozzie, do you soak the model in the laquer thinners or scrub it with a toothbrush?
