Problems with Modelmaster Jackson Evans

Hi all,

I am having a problem with Modelmaster Jackson Evans in Scotland. I ordered and paid for a set of 7mm BR number plates for my Heljan Large Prairie from Jim at Modelmasters in early January 2020 but he sent me a 4mm set. I returned them to him and when I rang him and spoke to him, he apologised and said that he had misread the order and that he would have to order further supplies of the necessary thickness of brass for the 7mm sets. Not long after that, of course, everything went just a little awry with the pandemic and, when I spoke to him again in the summer, he said that, obviously, he was unable to source any supplies of brass and that I would just have to wait until the factory had re-opened, which was fair enough under the circumstances. I rang him again in October and he said that he was still waiting for materials but that it should not be much longer.

In early May this year, I had neither received the number plates nor any further communication from him and, since than have rung him a total of five times but all I am getting is voice mail, so could anybody tell me if they have had any contact with Jim or received any orders because I am beginning to wonder if I will ever see the numbers or my £14.49 payment!

Any information would be much appreciated.

Richard

I'm afraid that this has been covered - in many pages - on RMWeb and elsewhere, too. Unfortunately, you are by no means alone. I did receive an order that I placed eventually, but only after a number of false starts and broken promises. I considered myself lucky. I have no idea what the problem with the seller is, but assume that it's a combination of one-man band coping with a lot of orders / the pandemic / personal ill health / chronic disorganisation. All four appear to apply given other posts I've seen.

He comes across as being quite arrogant to me; he has issued a newsletter in the past critical of the postings on RMWeb rather than being apologetic. Lost count of how many last ever sales he has had. Maybe someone to threaten with a Small Claims Court ; it worked for me on other trader who sat on rather larger amount of money rather than supplying the product.
Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. I have since heard that he had to have eye surgery and is now catching up with something like 1700 orders and has no time to reply to all the queries. However, although I am sympathetic, it would not take two minutes to change the voice mail to apologise and briefly explain the situation instead of just ignoring every message which, after 17 months of waiting is becoming a little trying - to say the least! My wife and I, before we retired, used to have a celebration cake making business and I know that, if we had treated our customers like this, we would have very quickly had no business at all.

I will just have to continue to be patient!

Thanks again.

Richard
Sounds familiar & a little worrying. I placed an order in early May and nothing thus far. There’s no response to e-mail and for follow up one is directed to call during a narrow window during a UK afternoon. I have tried to call on a number of times and not only no answer but the mailbox is full. I guess I’ll have to write my £40+ off to experience … v frustrating & wrong.
@klf1956 indicated that the company is now deregistered. I had heard from other sources that the business was winding down.
Sadly, there are a few businesses who provide name plates who are all reaching retirement/health issues and winding up.
Thanks Graham. Sadly they maybe winding down but still take orders … & of course your money!
I successfully put-in and recieved an order for some transfers and a couple of name/numberplates a few months ago (mid-April), however as noted elsewhere this did take a long time to eventually turn up...
I have had a similar experience with orders for 00 gauge brass nameplates for Hornby Merchant Navy locos. An order placed in October 2020 has not been received, nor a more recent order in March 2021. I spoke to Jim in May last year and he explained about supply issues and his health, but like other correspondents I have had no success with the mobile or landline numbers more recently and certainly no reply to emails. Most frustrating. Better communication would be helpful. We all understand about COVID disruption, but reassurance would be helpful.

I have been caught by this as well, ordered a set of nameplates on 24th June 2022, received emails stating order being processed but nothing lately.
I've been waiting for my transfers since 28th January 2021, same problem with voicemail, finally got through and was promised my transfers in January 2022. Nothing happened. The guys dishonest at best, taking money and not supplying goods.

I wish I had checked this forum before ordering and I would have saved my money. I had assumed it was a bona fide business but from several comments including one with a link to companies house which shows the business as being dissolved I am not the only one having problems. I placed an order at the end of November and apart from a long delayed e-mail saying we are processing your order I have have received nothing nor heard any more. E-mails go unanswered and I have tried to phone - no answer (at least phone number isn't dead) Their website seems to be down.
I know we have had Christmas in between and also they have had some pretty bad snow in Scotland which may possibly explain the delay BUT it looks like a consistent pattern from other comments of long delays to order or taking the money and never sending the orders. Not sure if I can get my money back as I paid using my Revolut card and their customer service is useless so little hope of getting my money back let alone getting what I ordered.
Does anyone know of a RELIABLE source of 00 nameplates?
Any suggestions would be appreciated
Robin

Same here ordered NOV 2022 Nothing only vague e-mail saying processing order. Never replies to e-mails, never answers phone website now down.
Any idea of a reliable place to get 00 nameplates?
Looks like it’s a familiar problem for me. The T&C state that they do not answer emails, so, what is the point of having an email address? For me it’s only £9.50, so not catastrophic but I’ll try and get my money back through PayPal. it’s a nice little earner for him. Take loads of orders and do nothing!

Just taken up my dispute with the credit card company. Phone line no longer in use. Receiving the message "the number you have dialed has not been recognized, please check and redial"

Well I'm awaiting orders from December 2022 totalling just over £66.64, what can I do with a dead phone line and no response to emails?
Hi everyone just joined the forum. I had dealings with a him awhile ago. I managed to get my money back through Paypal. The fact that he is still running and taking orders is beyond belief. As you have seen from the previous posts the company was dissolved. That means that James Grindlay the owner and sole director of the company is breaking the law by continuing to run. Though some people believe it's not the same company. It clearly is the same company that was dissolved. In fact at one time he posted this message on the same website: "I will close down when I want to close down, not when somebody tells me too". It turns out that he was locked out of the building he uses too.
Anyone not yet got a refund it might help if you tell your bank that the company was dissolved and they can look that up.

According to Google you can report a dissolved company still trading UK. You tell the Financial Conduct Authority about it and report online or call 0300 123 2040.

PLEASE DO NOT USE HIM
