That incline looks very steep. It might be a "trick" of the photograph but I think it might be a bit too much. How long are your trains going to be? If you just plan a single coach and loco or railcar, you might be able to make it at a run. I strongly advise you to test it before you go any further with the scenery side. It would be a shame for it not to work out.

One way to reduce the incline would be to give the mountain station a "step" of its own to sit on at a lower height and have a sheer cliff just behind it to clear the hidden track at the back if you see what I mean.

Hi Matt,

At the risk of saying I told you so, dwb is right. You will be lucky to get a loco + 1 carriage up that incline.

I assume you are using Peco Setrack curves which, for the inner radius, are 228mm long. That means you are trying to climb 14cm over less than 1 metre of track which is a grade of 1 in 6.5. To raise the track by this amount you need a minimum of 6 metres. I would suggest you seriously reconsider your plans and maybe look at my earlier suggestions. While your idea of a mountain station is admirable you might like to think more in terms of a small hill rather than a mountain. Alternatively if you really want to raise the track by this much you will need to think about a helix.

Hi Matt,

Don't get too down-hearted.

Given your limited space availability have you given any thought to 'N' Gauge.

There is a very good link on one of the other threads to this site http://www.scenicmodelrailways.com/ on which are pictures and details of an N Gauge layout which would fit into your space and might appeal to you. Have a look at the 'Billy's N Gauge Layout.

Hi Matt, you've done the right thing joining this forum as these fellas know what they are talking about. If I had joined 12 months ago it would have saved me alot of cursing and throwing my toys around the room trying to get one line to cross another. After experimenting and running every train and bit of rolling stock I own up a gradient,I finished up with an overall climb of at least 15 feet and it only just clears the double mainline underneath it. There is also a branchline disappearing under my station to a terminus,(this is detachable as it fills up the rest of my room) its also about a 15 foot incline and a class 37 starts to slip if it has more than 8 coaches. Through my personal experience,if your unsure about something ask these guys! And dont forget to have fun
