Question about power controllers for 58-63 Tenshodo 4-8-8-4 H0 Engines.

So my fellow hobbiests, I went in both feet wet and bought an ancient dual can 16 driver macho machine called a Tenshono #126 4-8-8-4 engine # 4002 H0 scales with T-126 Tender.

Here's my problem. Whoever the owner was previous, he knew what he was doing...I however am a novice and do not. The engine is fitted with the PFM 02 sound producer mounted in the Tender ( curcuit board and speaker ) and is wired via a three pin wiring connector from the engine. This is all great news but...

I tried running the Engine on a brand new track and controller by Backmann and it failed. Could not get the engine to budge or even hum, what do you think?

This is apparently a DC unit.

Does it require a specific controller? The track set up I tried to using is a point to point track set featuring auto reversing action. Seemed legit at the time.

I just want the engine to do what it was designed to do, ride the rails.

When I bought this beauty at the Train Show a fellow there with his own booth had a three foot test track, he marveled at the engine and centered it on the track and fired it up. Both sets of drivers rolled and the Head lamp lit up. There was a small but distinct sound that came from the tender. I didn't have the ability to ask the right questions...

...the question might be...what kind of conroller and track is going to work here?

Simple uncomplicated question. NO DCC.

Models of this type typically draw a lot more current than normal in copntemporary plastic bodied models, I would suggest looking for a controller with an output of 2.5A or more at 12V. No idea of what is available in the USA, but I am sure there are dealers who can advise. All the best with it, the model is a beauty.

That's more info than I have, other than the model is older than me. As with 34C, I would suggest a dealer. In the US, I'd be trying Reynaulds first.
I did find the Tenshodo website HERE. It's an interesting company. There is a form on the contact page, so give that a go also. You might need to include the model and/or serial number.

It would great to see it up and running. According to the website, Tenshodo specialises in realistic movements. I'm not sure what that means on a layout, but it sounds interesting.
I'd say that the sound components are from the factory also. I was surprised to read that a loco this old had sound, but it's another Tenshodo feature apparently.

While this Tenshodo model is likely to be amongst the best models of this protoype in HO, there's ample alternative choices.

Half a century ago I popped into Victors, looking for suitable Athearn mechanisms that I could fit into UK diesel bodies, and somehow Bernie talked me into splashing £25 on the Rivarossi model. I still have it, and may yet fit independent motors to the two powered chassis, and give it a second decoder, so that the front engine can slip a little on starting.
