QUOTE (LFDRR @ 12 Jul 2012, 08:32) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Did you check the carbon brushes Ray?

I have a cheapy mitre saw and the brushes are tight in their slots so after a while stopped reaching the commutator. I took them out, and took some of the sides off them with emery paper, now they slide easily and the saw works fine.

Just a thought

Angie

Thanks Angie

The same thought struck me last night!

I will have a look!

Well I checked the brushes ! And they weren't there! I must have removed them at some stage because they were faulty but never bought the replacements.

Order in with Solent Tools for a set! DOH !

Pouring down here so no progress today...

Well, after my embarrassing episode, I have pressed on.

Today has been pretty miserable but I have managed to cut out the sides, back and front panels for a drawer unit.
Not much I know, but a little step forward.

A couple of cattle wagons arrived in the post today. That is nine so far with four more to come!

I also bought a couple of meat vans, but don't tell the cows!

Some picture progress today now that it has stopped raining for a while.

I put in the old cut-up baseboards as side panels for the drawer runners

Upside down shot

And Proper way up!

I have also cut out all the pieces for one drawer but it will have to wait for a week as I am off on holiday on Monday.

Hi Ray all looks very strong and well made, better to do small bits at a time and do it well. Hope your not staying here for your holiday not looking any better weather yet.

Final post for a week.

I managed to construct my "test" drawer

Drawer fitted - I hadn't realised that the drawer runners needed to be so low in order to tilt the drawer to fit. So this drawer will be inserted lower down and a new drawer with a taller front plate will be fitted as the top drawer.

OK off for a well deserved rest now !

Back again! had a lovely holiday and a great trip to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway (separate thread for pics). The signalman even let me in his box to take some pics.

Unfortunately I have been told by some Antarctic Research & Survey Expedition members that I am posting too much detritus on here.
However, nobody is forced to read my thread!

I received the brushes for the circular saw in the post.

Unfortunately, like me, they were too thick. However a little filing put them in order and I now have a working circular saw!

No more progress until Wednesday I suspect when I buy the wood for the next frame.

QUOTE Antarctic Research & Survey Expedition

Nearly joined this ship many years ago, but declined the offer, found out that on arrival in the Antarctic, you were greeted only by a mob of Penguins......

No railways there....yet...........

Ray I haven't really checked this out, but it might apply to you and others building the underside storage to their layouts.
My son in building his new house has got a friend of his who is an excellent cabinet maker to build him a new hi spec kitchen.
And what does this guy use for the carcass? He buys Ikea stuff and adapts it.

It might both save money and a whole lot of effort methinks.

LF&T

PS
With all this under baseboard storage, how do you get underneath the layout to install wiring? Can the actual baseboard be propped up vertically to access the underside?

Hi.
The drawers are all removable and the baseboard top sits on an open batten framework that is screwed on top of the L girder frame. So hopefully wiring will be ok.

I forgot about a day out tomorrow (Yes they do let me out of the Institute !!), so no discount on wood this week!

Bought enough wood for the side frame and managed to cut 6 legs and make up the 2 L girders today.

Because the curves could be tight (most C.J. Freezer's plans are) I have decided to increase dimensions all round by 3" to give me a little leeway, especially for double tracks at both ends.

No pics, you have seen what the frames look like previously!

The second frame is now complete.

For those of you unfamiliar with L Girder construction (like myself!) a set of battens is added to the top of the L Girders ( I have indicated the lateral ones but longitudinal ones may also be added between these)

Then the trackbed can be added. (Upright risers can be joined to the horizontal battens to raise the trackbed for gradients or to allow for landscaping)

Too hot to work now! More later!
