Red or grey

Can anyone tell me where or when BR gulf red and BR grey were used for goods wagons? Did one colour replace the other at a certain date, or was it a regional thing?

What do you mean by BR gulf red? If you mean bauxite(sort of cacky browny red colour) and grey then one was applied to "fitted" stock and the other "unfitted" although I can never remember which is which (grey unfitted I think) and both colours were used side by side until the end of steam and probably beyond as well (don't quote me on that as I'm no expert).

I found the term BR gulf red in the Graham Farish catalogue. I assume than that it's another term for bauxite.

So, next question: What is fitted and unfitted stock? I notice that there are guards vans in both bauxite and grey.

'Fitted' with vacuum/or air brakes. Yes it was grey for 'unfitted'.There most certainly had to be a brake van with 'unfitted'.It wasn't until they changed the 'manning' rules that there had to be a brake with 'fitted'.Then there was 'part fitted' (25%, 50%, so on) then it gets complicated.
