This new item has been announced by Roco. It is a starter set with the following features;

Digital starter set with E 10.3 electric locomotive and DB express train

A WORLD FIRST!

Content/functions:

For friends of the third epoch ("Epoche III") of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, this starter set offers a model E 10.3 locomotive with digital controls and additional digital functions. In addition to offering a wide range of sound functions, the digital controls can also be used to raise and lower the pantograph. The three express train cars, all in 1:87 scale, have doors which can be opened and closed using digital controls. This is accompanied by characteristic door noises.
Roco geoLINE track oval R3:
14 straights G200 (incl. 1 current connection element)
12 curves R3
Transformer 10725, 50 VA/3,2 A
Digital amplifier 10764, 50 VA/3,2 A
multiMAUS
9999 locomotive addresses programmable
Initial voltage, acceleration, and deceleration can
be individually programmed (optionally with 14 or
28 speed steps)
Light separately controlled

It has the standard starter set stuff a DCC controller and track but what make sthis stand out is some of the digital features offered. The loco has raising and lowering of pantographs. Although this was previously offered by Maerklin and Trix it is still pretty rare. What it also has is opening and closing of coach doors accompanied by the correct sounds. Sounds good doesn't it? and all for the sum of 790 Euro's

*** I hate this - more and more and ever more good reasons to start buying EU prototype...

What a fanstastic set of features! - a good solid DCC start plus some real operating interest. I'm not fussed about the pantograph but the opening doors are very very tempting. It really looks good value too!

I have just trawled through all of Roco's new items and it seems that the operating door coaches are only available in this set. So if you want them this is your only option to get them, unless you want to take a chance on Ebay at some later point.

Although Maerklin Trix offered the digitaly controledraising and lowering of pantographs on the E 03, it did not have sound as well so to date it would seem that this is the most high specc'ed DCC release in terms of variety of features and kinetic features. 790 euros will probably come down to about 650 after tax off for those outside the EU. Certainly worth thinking about. These are digital features I have wanted to see for some time.

I'm tempted with this also - I expect there will be a certain amount of "set splitting" going on when it's available.

Guess it should be available for the £450 mark - there's a lot of kit for the money.

I agree it does all look very impressive!

Open doors and moving pantographs with sound will perhaps be seen on all sorts of models in a few years time? A case of until you have it you don't mind not having it because it is a 'gimmic' but then when you do it makes all your other models seem a bit boring in comparison? Roco must have invested in these mechanisms so I imagine they will be appearing on other releases in the nearish future, especially it it sets them apart from other manufacturers for a while.

Now just excellent detail is not enough, coordinated sound and onboard motion are the new standards. That Trix H0 is being repositioned away from Maerklin a bit should present some very healthy competition in future? Things are looking good if Roco, who were bought a while ago, are being so bold and ambitious. None of the dreaded 'consolidation' in evidence?

I think I could get away with mentioning the new Roco N starter set (21200) here, a DB 101 with EuroCity train with DB and ÖBB coaches. Although without these new excellent H0 features the BR 101 has headlights and tail lights (normally you only get these on shunters) with digital control.

RRP 229,00 EUR will certainly be very tempting with the digital system and track included!

I would have expected that they would use the same technology on other coaches as there is certainly a market for them. I can't wait.

These will really sell well.

This truly an interesting innovation. Time will tell how successful it is, and I truly hope that it is successful. From here can we maybe hope to have baggage and box cars also having opening and closing doors?

But there are some questions that have yet to be answered:

Are there opening doors on both sides that can be opened independently?
Does each car have its own decoder?
How easy is it to change the address on the door opening chip?

Now if it was an Epoch II set I could be tempted, but alas it is far to modern for me!

Or alternatively you could buy it from Modellbahn Kramm for 711 Euros inc vat or 597.70 without vat. and save some money.

hi neil, that cheaper again. but then you have import duties on it. but. it will still be cheaper in the long run

Hi John,

I only get hit with import duty if it's delivered by UPS. When a delivery comes by regular mail I have never had to pay import duty. As you're located in the EU you shouldn't have to pay any import duties from Germany. Big savings to be made. I could buy that from here for 400 quid!

hi neil,

very tempting to get one, however i'm running on (oo) gauge. and still have to get the layout up yet. and getting the green stamps gathered up is another. i did read somewhere that you can run a ho gauge on a oo track if it's for ho/oo on the packaging. otherwise it would not run on the oo track, i'm not 100% on this. this what i would like to see in the brittish oo dmu's or emu's, now that would be something. something for hornby and bachmann to think about. of course there would be a premium. if it was a reasonable one, i don't think they would be in stock for long. just imagine a class 170 scotrail with opening doors with sound at the touch off a button. give me a nudge to waken me
up. ah well we can all dream.

All HO stock will run on OO track as both scales use the same spacing between the rails despite HO being 3.5mm to the foot compared to ))'s 4mm to the foot. That is why the purists prefer HO to OO. The rest of us can live with the 12.5% error in track gauge

Back to the topic, as much as 'd love this set, I'll have to wait and see what other innovations ROCO release in the future as I don't have the funds for that right now!

A word of warning: In case you hadn't noticed, sterling has devalued by at least 10% since last December and is still heading south. Anything priced in Euros is going to be considerably more expensive this year than last. Of course it may still be cheaper to buy from the continent, but the deals aren't as good as before.

Well John it may not be as far fetched as you think. I have sent my Class 170 Scotrail to Richard Johnson where he is adding internal lighting, directional day and night lighting and authentic sound. I didn't think of opening and closing doors at the time but I guess you could always ask. All these modifications are possible if you are prepared to pay for them.
