I have never encountered problems with plastic couplings snapping due to weight I regulary run a 8 coahces rake of Bachmann mk1s (heavy) with out problems. Speaking of close coupling I use the close couplers provided in recent bachmann coaches in my Mk1 rakes and i find these to be very sturdy and good looking.
