I wonder how similar 'Scalextric Digital' is to DCC?

Could it be based on NMRA DCC, but not compliant in all details, but this doesn't matter as there is only one supplier involved?

But if Hornby then used it as the basis for the Select and associated decoders, it might explain their current problems.

You would have to try a few Power Slides around the curves with your Hornby Pendolino. that might give the game away?

Heard of a few people using the 4 amp scalextric transformer with the Select, 'sposed to be the same power pack, but available now, unlike the Hornby pack.

Seen them going on ebay....
