Hello dear friends,

I want to introduce my freeware layout design program, called SCARM, which you can download and test from www.scarm.info. After the last major update, SCARM is able to print the track plan and now it has more than 40 track libraries included.

Because SCARM is still under development, I collect any ideas about new functionality or improving the existing features. I will appreciate any comments concerning SCARM here or by email - scarm at scarm dot info.

I was not sure where to post this topic, so I do it here - please excuse me if this is not the correct place or if I'm violating some of the forum rules.

Hi Preston,

Please tell me, which antivirus do you use, to check SCARM?
I see that there are some alerts for file named scam.exe, which is close to scarm.exe (SCARM executable file), but is not the same.

I am using Avira Antivir with latest definitions to be sure that my computer where I am compiling SCARM is clean and safe.
Here is also latest antivirus report form www.soft82.com by NOD32: http://www.soft82.com/antivirus-report/dow.../windows/scarm/
If you are still unsure, you can use some other trusted downloading place for SCARM like www.download.com - the link for SCARM here is http://download.cnet.com/SCARM/3000-18496_4-75328501.html.

Thank you, guys

I will continue to work over SCARM and some of the planned features for the next versions are Platforms, Custom shapes (for roads, buildings, etc.), Inventory (for tracks) and some other improvements, like adjustment of already placed flex-tracks. Depending on my free time, they will appear soon or in the future.

Check also the FAQ section in the documentation (F1) or in the web site - it takes about 10 minutes of reading, but explains a lot for SCARM features, tips and tricks. If the answer of given question is missing, post the question here

Thank you again for cordial welcome

@Fellwalker: Unfortunately, there is no Mac version of SCARM, because I have no Apple computer and because it will be difficult and time consuming for me to support SCARM for more than one OS platform.

Hello again

@spurno: I saw that you have some problems, running the SCARM self-extracting archive. Here is the original ZIP file: http://www.scarm.info/temp/SCARM.zip. Try to download and extract it. Some times, due to internet connection drops or by some other reasons, the download cannot be fully completed. When you try to download it again, the browser just looks at the cache and saves same broken downloaded file again. And when you run that broken file, it gives an error or just nothing happens.

@Stephen: Thank you for the good words
About your points:

QUOTE (Stephen-67772 @ 5 Mar 2011, 22:21) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>1. I felt the scroll wheel on the mouse in the 3D function was reversed (at least for me). When I rolled the scroll wheel "forward", I expected the view to zoom in but instead the view zoomed out. Did anyone else experience this?

2. I could not locate any turntables however I understand that they are being considered in future updates.

3. In 3D screen, you need a "2D" button on the toolbar to take you back to 2D mode.

4. In 3D mode I would like to see a "point of view" (POV) or "loco view" feature where you can lock the camera to the track and move the camera "along the track, providing a cab view. I very clumsily simulated this with my mouse to simulate the shunting operation of my design to a colleague. Whilst I do not want to turn SCARM into a train simulator, I feel this simple feature would be very helpful (see attached image 3).

5. When using the Screenshot function in 3D mode, can you provide other image formats in addition to BMP's? i.e. JPG and PNG?

6. I think was your program evolves you may want change the name. When I first read the opening post, and indeed when the software was extracting, the first this I my brain registered was the word "SCAM". This may be a distraction to some users downloading and reading it for the first time.

1. That is true, I will fix it in the next version.
2. There are no turntables at the moment, but I am working over them and they will appear in some of the next versions.
3. You can just close the window by [X] button. However, I will add Close button in the toolbar, because many users are accustomed to it.
4. OK, I will think over this

5. I will add a JPEG output for 3D screenshots very soon.
6. Yes, I noticed this, too late unfortunately. I will think about it - any new name suggestions are welcome

Hello again,

Thank you all, for your posts

I decided to make installer for SCARM, starting from 0.8.x versions, as it will be easier to deal with it for most users. SCARM must be simple, not only for tracks laying and editing, but for installing and running too

@ Patrick Draper: Yes, may be I will change the working with baseboards in some of the next versions, because editing with recreating is not convenient. About easier track connections - if it is about flex-tracks when connected to another tracks, it will be changed in the near future, because the tolerances are set to very small values now. If it is something else, please tell me, to check it

Thank you, Stephen,

Your suggestions are good. I will try to implement displaying of length of the tracks selection in the status bar soon. About entering the baseboard with some input dialog box - I will think over it and how can be realized. Now I am working over turntables and they will appear in some track libraries in the next version of SCARM

Hello again,

The new version 0.8.0 of SCARM is ready

Most important new features are standalone installer, support for turntables and baseboard editing. There are also many corrected and updated libraries, due to some errors like doubled track names, doubled item numbers and some new parts. If you are using a turntable that is missing from SCARM library files, let me know and I will add it in the next update.

QUOTE (trainsntrees @ 22 Mar 2011, 20:58) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Hi

slightly off topic and I am not suggesting there is anything wrong with this software.

The point I wish to make to people here is that, scanning a piece of software that has not been on general release will never be found by antivirus programmes, because they work on the basis of signitures and if someone writes something unique the antivirus will not have a signature for the malware.

Again to be clear I am not suggesting for one second there is anything wrong with this software, I just wanted to point out a common misconception that a negative result from an antivirus tool means its ok, it does not mean there is no malware only that it has none the antivirus can recognise. Be careful what you download.

Regards

Kal

Because this directly involves me, I must say the following:

SCARM was released almost one year ago and has more than 3500 downloads up to now. If there were something suspicious with it, all major antivirus software would report it already.
Actually, everybody can send SCARM files to any antivirus laboratory such as Norton, Panda or Kaspersky, where the engineers will check them and examine SCARM machine code for any dangerous activity. This is the way in which antivirus signatures are created.

If somebody thinks that I am spending my free time to make some unique viruses, especially targeting railway modelers, please do not download and use my program.

Thank you, Stephen,

I will think about "snap-to-grid" option, but I cannot promise it, because it will be difficult to be realized.
Everybody can suggest a new name for SCARM or can vote for keeping the current name if likes it.
The promotion in nscale.net is done

I am really happy, that you like my software

@preston: You can switch to inches as measurement unit in SCARM - just click on upper left corner, where mm is displayed and select "inches" in the appeared Settings dialog box.

Hello Dave,

When you start the program with blank trackplan, press any of the track selection buttons and the given track will appear in the center of the plot with no need of placing the Start point. Next tracks will be connected to each other. Please be aware that SCARM does not support "drag-and-drop" of the tracks for now, but it is possible such functionality to be implemented in the future.

Hello Dave,

In SCARM, tracks are glued by default. If you want to move the track, select it, hold Ctrl key and then drag it with the mouse. Or use Move command from context menu.
See also this clip:
- it will help you to get started with SCARM.

SCARM update 0.8.4 released. Added 3D supports management, which will allow creation of realistic-looking helixes and viaducts in 3D viewing mode, like those below:

Now SCARM is able to work with 58 different track systems. Try it

Thank you, friends

Your opinions are very important and valuable for me. With this positive feedback, I know that my work over SCARM is worthy, so I will continue to improve it with adding more functions and features in the new releases

I am already working over shapes, buildings, signals, roads and other like these to be created in SCARM

However, it will take more time than expected, because I am also working over 3D representation of these as custom created objects. It looks simple, but actually it is very complex functionality. So I will need at least a 2-3 months to finalize it. First tests are looking very good
