If you insert the foot end of a stocking (or cut the legs off a pair of tights) into the vacuum tube it will catch the unstuck scatter and you can use it again.
I usually remove the nozzle, insert about 12" of the stocking foot end first into the tube and fold back the remaining part of the leg around the outside of the hose. Then push the nozzle back in and /hold/ onto the excess stocking as you vacuum, that way you are in even less danger of the stocking disappearing into the guts of the machine leaving you with three problems:
1) How to get the stocking out of the mechanism
2) Explain to the vacuum owner why it happened
3) Explain why you had one leg of a cut down stocking in the first place
