Dear railroading friends.
Here some photos of our newest acquisition. It is not exactly a purchase; at the Privatanlagen Wettbewerb of the Faszination Modellbahn Sinsheim 2016, we won as second prize a 200-Euro voucher to spend at one German online shop of our choice. Good that the organizers stated that the 200-Euro had a "positive tolerance" but "without exaggerating". Therefore, we ordered an Atlas Master diesel-electric loco EMD GP 40 and 3 Atlas Master ACF Coalveyor cars.
Here something about our GP 40.

The detail and construction tolerances of the injection-molded parts are very good.
Next, we disassembled the unit, to de-burr and adjust the minor details.

To be underlined: this loco disassembles easily without struggling with stubborn, non-removable click-on parts. In few minutes, without the usual two-operators-six-screwdrivers-for-six-tabs mess, all the pieces come loose.
The frame is a solid die-cast piece of metal. In the available space for the loudspeaker, our non-DCC model has a removable heavy block of metal. Very good feature, for extra stability and traction.

The detail, again, is excellent. Even, the impellers of the radiators and dynamic braking rotate freely at the most gentle blow of air! However, the grilles that cover the impellers are too loose and come off too easily. A droplet of cyanoacrylate will fix them in place.

Mechanically, the motor and transmission appear sturdy. The two quill drives to the bogeys have real universal joints, and not the usual simplified dog-clutch arrangement. Heavy flywheels complement the motor.
The detail parts are separate, and are not a crude part of the bigger molds.

Accuracy of lettering is also good - beyond the close-up visual acuity of the average modeler ;-). Only strong magnification shows their imperceptible defects.
Now, we are working with files and fine abrasive paper to de-burr the various parts.

In the next weeks, a thorough weathering will follow.
Our plan is to use the GP 40 and 4 - 6 Coalveyors to take the Nickel ore, unloaded from our rotary railcar dumper, and transport them along a line to the ore processing plant. Due to the limited space available for our layout, only the first meter of line will be visible. Due to the limited time available, we prefer not to consider a specific time for the completion of this section. Before that, we will lay flextracks along our apartment, and play with our newly acquired rolling stock.
We will keep you informed.
