QUOTE (Pantograf @ 16 Aug 2016, 01:53) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>That Dutch double-decker looks great, I was just looking at it in one of the catalogs. I was watching these huge yellow train sets come and go for hours last year at the main Amsterdam train station.

Pantograf i was also looking at the Virm for the past month and finally 2 weeks ago i decided to take the plunge and get it and I was Lucky as this was the last set that they have. The only minus point will the the coupling which I believed that Rivarossi could have used a better coupling system.

This month's wagon purchase is from Tillig, my first model from that company. I chose it because it has a tanker container. The wagon livery is OBB Okombi which is a change from the AAE plain grey. Although both loads are containers, closer inspection shows that the orange wagon is actually a pocket wagon. This brings my complement of wagons up to 5. The total train length is just over 7 feet which is about my limit in the storage loops but I do like these wagons...

This second item is a Roco 1144 limited edition model (sound) which is/was on special at MSL at the moment. I did some research online to see if locos in this livery were seen working on the Brenner Pass - hence my youtube clip a week or so ago. One of the clips from 2012 showed an 1144 in this livery working a train up the pass. You can't really model freight on the Brenner in this era without an 1144 or two. When I get round to it and match the speeds of the Lok Taurus and 1144, I'll put them to double heading the freight.

very nice David. I came back from Zurich the other day and was looking at all the tanker wagons parked up with Hoyer and VTG loads - it is a very inspiring journey!
I really like that 1144 as well - I have my eyes on the SBB Gottardo livery loco as I saw this in Zurich station before leaving after having just read about it in the rail magazine in the shop! It was looking decidedly filthy, though no surprise as white isn't a great colour to keep clean

I am resolutely keeping my fingers away from the buy button for that Re460! My collection of them is quite large enough already.

Sticking with the Gottardo theme here is a video I came across last week on how the vinyls were applied for the Credit Suisse Gottardo 2016 loco:

QUOTE (reddo @ 20 Aug 2016, 07:55) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>I can relate to that. BTW - do you know of any manufacturer (Liliput?) that makes the (BLS?) doppel-stock that is shown behind the Gottardo loco in my top picture?
Doesn't Roco make those? I know they make the SBB double-deckers, I'm just not sure if they're exactly the ones you're looking for. HAG also makes these (or used to). I remember the train we boarded at Interlaken was a BLS Re460 with SBB double-deckers. We're going there again next month for our annual visit.

Those Tillig container cars look great. I don't know what it is about Tillig but I really like their passenger cars, even more than ACME.

I've always been a fan of the Re460 and when in the region - Chur, Landquart, Interlaken I tend to spend too much time along the tracks with my camera. The OBB loco is a beauty as well.

The double decker carriages in your photo are SBB IC2000 stock. They have been available from Roco & Hag over the last 10 years or so. I think Roco has issued two series of the cars so far, the second maybe last year or the year before. I couldn't find any on the MSL website. I did find them on Roco's site where they are listed as not currently available. They seem to popular and sell out quickly. If you want some, start saving as they are not cheap but they are very nice.

Dear railroading friends.

Here some photos of our newest acquisition. It is not exactly a purchase; at the Privatanlagen Wettbewerb of the Faszination Modellbahn Sinsheim 2016, we won as second prize a 200-Euro voucher to spend at one German online shop of our choice. Good that the organizers stated that the 200-Euro had a "positive tolerance" but "without exaggerating". Therefore, we ordered an Atlas Master diesel-electric loco EMD GP 40 and 3 Atlas Master ACF Coalveyor cars.
Here something about our GP 40.

The detail and construction tolerances of the injection-molded parts are very good.
Next, we disassembled the unit, to de-burr and adjust the minor details.

To be underlined: this loco disassembles easily without struggling with stubborn, non-removable click-on parts. In few minutes, without the usual two-operators-six-screwdrivers-for-six-tabs mess, all the pieces come loose.
The frame is a solid die-cast piece of metal. In the available space for the loudspeaker, our non-DCC model has a removable heavy block of metal. Very good feature, for extra stability and traction.

The detail, again, is excellent. Even, the impellers of the radiators and dynamic braking rotate freely at the most gentle blow of air! However, the grilles that cover the impellers are too loose and come off too easily. A droplet of cyanoacrylate will fix them in place.

Mechanically, the motor and transmission appear sturdy. The two quill drives to the bogeys have real universal joints, and not the usual simplified dog-clutch arrangement. Heavy flywheels complement the motor.
The detail parts are separate, and are not a crude part of the bigger molds.

Accuracy of lettering is also good - beyond the close-up visual acuity of the average modeler ;-). Only strong magnification shows their imperceptible defects.
Now, we are working with files and fine abrasive paper to de-burr the various parts.

In the next weeks, a thorough weathering will follow.
Our plan is to use the GP 40 and 4 - 6 Coalveyors to take the Nickel ore, unloaded from our rotary railcar dumper, and transport them along a line to the ore processing plant. Due to the limited space available for our layout, only the first meter of line will be visible. Due to the limited time available, we prefer not to consider a specific time for the completion of this section. Before that, we will lay flextracks along our apartment, and play with our newly acquired rolling stock.

We will keep you informed.
