QUOTE (Alex Hempel @ 14 Jul 2020, 14:37) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>SRMan,

what make/model is that Swedish Y2?

I only have Queensland freight at this moment. Looking to build an approximation of the Great Southern when the new SDS NR30 is available, but rolling stock for that will be expensive.

My QLD fleet is the 2300 Class with coal hoppers, and the 2170 class with cattle wagons.

Here's my BR 132 in East German livery, with original, East German made passenger cars, that are probably older than me. This is my 'Berlin - Prague Express' and probably the most prototypical Era IV German train I have. I still need one or two more of those passenger cars.

I'm not very far with scenery yet, but this is only my training layout. Construction of a bigger layout will commence soon.

The IC3/Y2 is a Heljan model. At the time it was the only version I could get, although I would have preferred one in a DSB livery. Subsequently I was able to get a DSB one, and have another on the way, this time the unique unit 5051 in red and black (which looks rather attractive). A photo will follow once it arrives her in Melbourne. Mail transit times from overseas are highly variable at present.

That's a bit of a luxury having a training layout!

I have lashed out and ordered a PLuX16 sound decoder for my Ludmilla BR 232 locomotive, seeeing as the sounds are quite distinctive. I haven't figured out where the speaker will fit yet, though.

I lived, studied and worked in Brisbane for 15 years (got married there too!), and used QR for commuting purposes for many of those years, going from diesel-hauled (mostly 1720s, but many other classes as well) and DMU (2000 class and occasionally 1900s) to the EMUs, and occasional ARHS steam trips. In diesel days there was a train from Central at 5:21pm every afternoon that always had unusual motive power, very often a 2100 class, sometimes 1550s, and occasionally a 1300, always on an Evans set. I would aim for that train whenever I could. At that time 2100s and similar mineral line types had their fuel restricted to keep the weight down to the 15 ton axle load for the Brisbane suburban lines, but with 2000hp they could be relied upon for a lively run.

Anyway, nice vids of what you are doing. I'll look forward to seeing more in due course.

Well, it will get dismantled when the new layout is started. We recently created more recreational space on the property, and the current (very small) train room is required for other purposes. The new one will be roughly 6.5x4m, enough space to keep me busy for years just building the new layout

Which sound project did you get? I love the Ludmilla sounds, and I can't decide if the Henning sound or the ESU sound project is better. My Ludmilla came with a Zimo decoder and a stock sound project which wasn't very good. With the help of another forum user I was able to update the decoder with the Henning sound. It made such a big difference.

I have downloaded the ESU library sound project at this stage (I have a LokProgrammer). Where does the Henning project come from, please? I don't know of that one.

As a bit of curiosity, I posed the DSB/DB Doppelstock coaches against the NSWGR V set, and you can see the extra height on the European stock, although, as I said before, the NSW stock is fairly generous in its height anyway.

The DSB driving control coach is a Hobby Trade item, but I have not been able to get any of the matching centre coaches yet - they do crop up from time to time, but not very often. In the meantime, I have a DB AG set in Intercity colours from Brawa, and two of these coaches are in the photo purely to stop the DSB one from being lonely!

I am fairly sure I haven't posted a photo of the DSB car before, so it does 'legitimise' my post in this topic.

Unfortunately it seems you can only get the Henning sound project for ESU decoders if you send your decoder to Matthias Henning in Germany to be reprogrammed. For Zimo decoders, you can download the project and acquire a load code either from Henning directly, or from some Zimo resellers. It shouldn't matter too much, the ESU sound project for the Ludmilla gets a lot of praise as well.

You can see the Henning project in action on the second video clip of my earlier post.

I really like that one. I wouldn't mind having a twindeck train, but haven't found the right one yet. That blue/grey colour scheme looks appealing.

And today I found ths awaiting me when I got home from work. Purchased from Hobbykaeden in Aalborg in Denmark, it was ordered on 21st June and turned up today, 16th July. Considering the general problems with mails, this was pretty good.

DSB unit 5051, as I mentioned before, was finished in a unique, and very smart looking red and black livery. This Heljan model has a few improvements compared to the previous ones, but I think I will still have to do my usual modifications to get it truly reliable. These involve adding extra weight to the driving cars, and putting screws in to retain the lower bogie guides more positively. This unit came equipped already with a small ESU decoder, not sure at this stage whetehr it is v4 or v5. It ran very, very quietly and smoothly straight from the box.

I have posed it here on the layout after a quick test run, and with the previous unit 5003, although I haven't fitted the end couplings to 5051 yet, so this was purely a posed shot. Unfortunately, when I run the two together, the couplings will not allow for a really close gap between the end units, but I think they will look good running together anyway. I know the periods are slightly askew, but not too far out.

As a slight aside, for Alex Hempel, there were some glimpses of the DSB double deckers around Copenhagen H station when I was there, but I didn't get any really good shots. Lugging heavy luggage around cramps ones' style a bit! I thought the dark blue scheme looked a bit dire and forbidding on the ME diesels, but the coaches and IC3/IR4 units looked fine.

As far as ESU sound projects go, when I am purchasing just the sound projects from a few of the British suppliers, I supply them with the serial number of the decoder I wish to reblow, and they supply the file by email, locked to that serial number, so I save considerably on two-way postage plus the risk of losing an expensive sound decoder in the mail. I have a LokProgrammer so can do the reblows myself.

Hello again,

Some photos of LS Models 77001 Ã-BB WLABm and WLBm double deck sleepers (N gauge) in their original livery with a Pflatsch. I was very fortunate to buy these recently on Ebay and the set is basically brand new/unused; not a single blemish and the storage boxes undamaged. I have been patiently monitoring Ebay for a set of these to surface since they are out of print since 2009.

With this addition to my fleet of Ã-BB coaches I am complete with the Ã-BB coaches in the Wiener Walzer euronight train EN466/467 of 2004 except for the missing 3 Hungarian Mav-Start coaches. Furthermore these coaches can be used for the same train upto 2008 when their livery was gradually switched over to the Rolf Rudiger colour scheme and Wortemark ( see earlier posts of photos).

As some are aware these sleepers have had another livery change recently to Nightjet.

Curiously I noticed here has been a misprint for the labelling on the packaging as seen in the first image where both are labelled WLBm, furthermore these coaches have the incorrect bogies as mentioned already in my earlier post of LS Models 77000 with the Wortemark; this error was fixed with a special run of these sleepers with Wortemark by Menzels Lokschuppen 97000 (which I posess as well).

I will hopefully get a video uploaded on Youtube of the 2004 rake running with substitute Fleischmann Hungarian Gosa coaches until one day a manufacturer will make the correct MAV coaches.

Cheers

Hello again,

A while back I'd mentioned about two Spanish manufacturers in the new items announcement for 2019/2020 from MFTrain and Mabar Tren. As I understand their products are not readily available in the UK so sourcing from dealers abroad is advised. However their products tend to disappear fairly quickly due to supply and demand, so advance ordering from a major dealer is recommended to avoid disappointment. I have to be honest I was hesitant of buying these since I have never seen in person or handled any products from MFTrain or Mabar Tren before.

I was able to purchase 5 sets (4 shown in above photo) of MFTrain's Gefco Laeks TA 370 car transporter for which I'd like to use to represent a car transporter train. Typically you'd find in real life about 14 to 15 of these 3 axle wagons along with another 4-5 variants of car transporter wagons of Gefco.

These wagons were done in co-operation with Lemke and as I understand there will be more in the near future; so there is no immediate need to find additional sets which are few these days.

These wagons are mainly metal and are really good quality. In the meantime I have to think about whether I run these as empty or fully loaded. If loaded with Peugeot 208 & 2008 modern cars (my personal choice) will be a problem since no one makes these in N scale; the only solution is to get a 3D model from some source and 3D print it for a master which will be used for multiple resin castings.

On to Mabar Tren's HBBILLS-uy refrigerated wagons of the Ã-BB/RCA, they have made 2 un-weathered sets (two wagons in each set).

I have to say the effort made on the detailing side with these wagons is probably the highest I have seen from a manufacturer in N. The main body is plastic with various photo etched parts added on.
There is also a bag with sprues for hook chain couplings and brake hoses along with photo etched shunting steps.

There is some criticism I have:

1) With the execution of the added photo etched parts, there is evidence of excessive glue in places when they were assembled but this can be remedied if weathered.
2) On one wagon a single hair was caught in the paint - this is again something I wish manufacturers really pay attention to when they subcontract out the production.
3) The painted steel railing and brake man's platform (as seen in photo) really detracts from the model's overall appearance in that the metallic paint used is not finely pigmented enough for this scale, far too coarse for my liking. This is a big problem in general with hobby paints when the scale of a model (miniatures, trains, aeroplanes etc) is small since the market is cluttered with poor quality metallic paints whether acrylic or cellulose based; there are some exceptions like Vallejo's Metallic Color line and AK's Extreme Metal paint.

Overall really nice models from Mabar Tren.

I'm glad that there are more manufacturers appearing on the market filling in niche areas and I am overall impressed with these two Spanish manufacturers so far and hope they have a bigger product range and market presence in the near future.

Cheers

Those look very nice.

I am also slowly collecting auto transport cars in HO and I'm jealous of some of the recent N scale models I've been seeing appear on the MSL website.

I thought those looked really good, assuming initially that they were HO scale. The fact that they are N scale makes them even better as the fine detail in that scale is much more difficult to achieve.

Very impressive.

Hi all,
Hope you are keeping well
I got this for a bit of fun and nostalgia, its the Hornby Stephensons Rocket.

I got it from Olivias Trains and had them do their smoke and sound upgrade.

I got some period figures and added passengers to the coaches, also added the crew as the included figures are OO scale and a bit large compared with my HO 1847/1900 figures, I even cut and shunted a top hat for the stoker

It comes with 3 coaches, but no auto coupling with this one, you have to manually hook up with little plastic chain links, very awkward and fiddly.

This won't be a regular runner on the layout but will make the odd nostalgic appearance.

Hi all,
Not sure what's happening with Youtube at the moment, but I'm having trouble posting videos.

Anyway, moving on, It occurred to me that when running my cross over shuttle line, if I used two identical trains, it would not be obvious to the viewer that there were in fact two trains crossing/passing each other.
You may remember that I got two Fleischmann 430073's Edelweiss elocks that would pull some small Edelweiss coaches, all with the same blue and white livery.
So to make it more clear that two trains are running, I got this Fleischmann 430075 E69/5 Elok

I also needed to get some small coaches like the Edelweiss ones, (as there are a couple of tight curves up near the top of the shuttle route) that would go with the E69/5, the only ones I could find to fit the bill were these Marklin coaches in burgundy and cream livery.

Again, I'm not worried if this is not a prototypical set up, as to me it is pleasing on the eye.
But, being Marklin, they were made for AC. I've had to wait a while for some Marklin DC wheel sets, but they arrived a couple of days ago and I set to work fitting them.
I found I had to be careful to make sure the axels were all in the same orientation, not just on each coach, but throughout the whole 3 coaches, as the axels are connected to a metal chassis and would short out when the couplers joined together .
The couplers were another issue. They are similar to some Roco or Fleischman couplers that I have a stock of, but bigger.

I went with the Fleischmann / Roco couplers because, as I've mentioned, they look similar and I had some that would fit into the socket at the rear of the Elok, and initially I thought they would marry up, but unfortunately they didn't
.
Not sure how old these coaches are, but they have no NEM 362 socket, so I had to do some surgery to fit a Fleischmann / Roco coupler to one end of the first coach.

Because of the solid metal chassis, I thought that lighting the coaches could be problematical, so I've tried out these Train-tech LED light strips that are battery operated and have a built in movement sensor to turn the lights on.
I went with some N scale ones as they were shorter, but still had to cut them down a bit. They are very easy and quick to fit, and for the baggage car, I chose a strip with added rear lantern. Apart from the issue of having to replace the batteries at some point, I think they are a great idea.
While I hade the coaches stripped down, I added some passengers to complete the look.

Apologies for the long winded post

That's a lot of trouble to have to go to but the result looks good

I'm waiting on a set of Piko DC axles for a deep well bogie wagon I bought second hand in Germany last year.
