I was merely asking whether there was ever a West German (DB) version!

The BR 83 is a great loco although the coupling/ uncoupling is a bit hit and miss at the moment. Loco does what it should but wagons sometimes uncouple when running (usually on bends) so wondering if the "euro couplings" on my Roco rolling stock are different to euro couplings on the loco. They do look slightly different

I found this Youtube video by Piko of the BR 83. It's in German but enjoyable. You get a good view of the digital coupling mechanism.

On the subject of coupling compatibility, you probably get the best performance when you stick to the couplings of just one manufacturer. My ESU Br 363 which has digital couplings recommends non-ferrous couplings which you can get from ESU. The very similar looking couplings from Roco have a metal dropper and don't work quite as well. It's a pity that the ESU couplings are out of stock at MSL ... .

David Thanks for the video and Info. When I did my first lot of digi couplings I used the Flieschmann profi system it,s okay but when I bought some HAG Techwiss shunters( Pope mobiles) they used the ones on zimo which are much better I have not used the Esu ones yet but I do have an ESU Shunter SBB on order with Digi coupling. Great stuff.

Hi Alan, the moral of the story about the 83.10 is just 'ask us first' if you need clarification about anything you are considering buying. On this forum there are many with historical knowledge and expertise on anything to do with German Railways, whatever 'Epoche'.
Piko are a age-old East German manufacturer, based in Sonneberg, Thuringen and I bought my first Piko loco in 1967!!! Adur Models in Shoreham were the first importers of the range in the 1960s, I believe. They would not dare to screw anything up today when DR prototypes are involved. Over the last 20 years they have developed a solid business model. Excellent H0 and N models, and good quality to make themselves more prominent in the 'snooty' former West German market. They have truly 'shaken the tree' with the recent V200 (for under 100Euro when released), excellent recent E-lok models, affordable rolling stock (eg 26.4m coaches) and in steam terms now an upgraded Br 82, the Br 78 and the 83.10.

Was never a problem, just a case of getting the correct coupler which I now have from a Piko standard goods wagon all seems to work better now.

Two deliveries today with different outcomes.
Firstly, the Roco 70443 E2 Alpspitz Bahn and matching coaches.

Very pleased with that
Secondly, the long awaited Trix 25027 BR 02
Not so happy

Seems to just randomly loose all functions. not just sound, and sort of coasts along with no control until until whatever the issue is goes away, sometimes a few seconds, sometimes longer.
Should I take it apart and check the decoder is plugged in properly or return it ?

Alan that's not good at all. I hope mine does not have that problem.
Send it back. They cost enough. The only way MSL Will learn if they do the Quality control before sending out.

That is worrying, I agree with Babs - send it back via your dealer.
The dealer should then let the manufacturer know.
For the money these things cost, they should be right first time.

Alan May I suggest that you put the link of the video on the email to MSL. they do not accept attachments on there emails but by doing this they can see for themselves.
As John say's the price of them is a lot of money. I had to send an Trix Elok because of Decoder light issues that could have been spotted before sending it to me. 600 Euros worth

The video clip suggests the loco moving irregularly (a little vertical 'bounce' at the rear end of the loco) on the slip just as the sound sharply cuts off. I'd suspect a momentary short which interferes with the decoder's processing, and the loss of sound and other functions is while the decoder is resetting.
Does the loss of functions you describe always start at the same locations on the layout or can this be anywhere on the layout?
Do you see any irregular movement from the loco as the loss of function starts?
Any wheelsets incorrectly gauged, dangling tackle underneath fouling the track, or the rods momentarily catching on a crankpin, each other, or fixed structure on the loco?

That looks to me like normal operation, in response to a command for a slight reduction in speed; the loco coasting with steam shut off. But if there was no speed reduction command...

I agree with 34C. I think the speed has been dropped right down and the loco is coasting.

I've seen 3 of these big tea kettles including the BR01 in action last month in Dresden and they hardly made any sound when coasting. What I didn't hear in the video was the sound of squealing brakes when the loco was coming to a full stop.
