South west digital class 158

Right, a quick install has been completed, my thaughts about the 158 sound chip are thus.
Firstly, upon starting up and while the loco is stationary, with the two 20x40 ml speakers in the one coach does make it apparent that the sound is only coming from one "end" or unit.
It is far less apparent when the unit is moving though.
I think I will try another set up by taking one of the speakers into the powered unit. There was not allot of room in the powered unit, so it may mean using a smaller 23 ml speaker or perhaps removing one of the drive shafts and having only one bogie driving.

F0 controls the lights, I have done the simple DCC lighting as I don't need separate head and tail lights, my 158 will only run in 2 coach formations and not be double headed.

F1. Start up and shut down. The start up and the shut down sequence are both much shorter than on "proper" diesels, the 158 takes just a few seconds

Although I have travelled on many 158 I cant say I have ever heard one start up or shut down. The sound is crisp and sharp, it does remind me of a bus though!

Horns are nice, you have a single and a double or you can combine them for single+ double or double + single, so in effect you get four variations.

With the 158 we also get door release. Its very good and although short, is the full amount of time it takes on the 158 I believe. The only problem with it is that once the door opening sound has been made you expect the doors to slide back and hoards of little people to walk out!

Air brakes

We get two air release sounds for the first time ( I think) on a SWd chip. The first is the shorter air release that is the sound made as the brakes are applied. Authentic class 158 brake squeal also comes on, the setting of with can be changed in Cv for lots of squeal (which I like on the 158) or less squeal ( my usual setting on loco classes)
The second air release is a recording of the sound made when the air brakes are released while at stop. This sound is longer and softer. Together they give a nice play factor to the operation which for me is what sound is all about compared to the far less realistic non sound models!

As with the HST and class 67, the 2 minute chips have been available since December 06 and SWD have been able to include top end notching as well as the low down sound speed range of sounds. The notching on the 158 sounds "top notch!"
"Its the way I tell um"

Notching up is very impressive, especially at the top setting when the engines are flat out.

Like wise there is notching down.

For me notching is taking a bit of use to get used to, though I have to say it is superb when you get the hang of it. At Calne MR show in January my stationary class 67 was a real crowd pleaser just going up and down the notches. It does give a new dimension to operation making it all the more realistic.
I think its safe to say that all future SWd projects will probably feature notching if at all possible.

I don't like DMU's really!
I have 2 x 158 (although I shall be getting the arriva 150+158) and a 153 and the truth be told I only baught these for use on my layout (Rimenough) when at exhibition, so punters could see something other than light engines. Now of course they can hear something different! On a run, the 158 sounds great. This clip

was done using a LH 90 handset, something I am not too used to using. I think I would have more control with my more familiar lh 100 handset. However, it hopefully gives you an idea of how good a DMU can sound!

You have Aux 1+2 which can be used for tail lighting should you want it, though I think combined with the door release sound the express lighting door open lights would also be worth considering.

That was very entertaining.

Did you fit the decoder and sound system your self?

As I have on e to fit and would enjoy some assistance in how to fit it ?

Hi Pete,
I have fitted all my sound chipped locos myself yes. If you use the links to go to u-tube above, you can then "see more clips from this user."

There is a button there somewhere that will take you to sound chiped SWD 08, double headed SWD 20, SWD 31, DCC supplies 33 (very poor chip) SWd and howes class 37, SWd 47, SWd 50, Howes class 60, SWd 66, swd 67.

Ask away!

Love it just love it and I agree with you the sound certainly makes a huge difference. I think it spoils you for the others without sound but then from 'you tube' I see you have the odd one or two done anyway! I have a pair of 20's with the sound and they are brilliant but one of the guys at the club has a SWD 31 which he is a bit dissapointed about as it is not very loud. He has only the single speaker as supplied with the decoder whereas I went for the larger oval ones. Have you found the 31 quiet? Did you remove the fan to fit yours? I thought he could leave the round speaker where it is and put one of mine taken from the 20 decoder and place it in the battery box/fuel t\nk underneath. Any thoughts on that?

Hi Chris,
From memory I did the 31 with a 20x40 speaker in a slightly cut down baffle box, about 1.5 ml off the top. This sits under the fan which I took out. A fan that only operates when the loco is moving so you have to move with the model to see it, is never going to be as good as sound! I think I then put the 23 ml speaker under the pcb facing down at the other end.

No, my 31 is not quiet, it is very loud. The baffle boxes make a huge difference tio sound and should be fitted where ever possible.

I wont run anything without sound now, as such I have a pair of class 57 sitting on the shelf. Everything else has sound fitted.

Thanks for that Simon. Yes he has the baffle box to fit yet but there is no room with the fan in place. We came to the same conclusion a fan that only moves when the loco does is of little us so out it goes and in goes the baffle box. So if I am right what you are saying is that you have two speakers in the 31 then? I think that is the way to go as I have a spare he can have. One of the other club members also has a 57 and he is waiting for someone to do a sound decoder for it - if they do!

Hi Chris,
Yes two speakers is almost always better than one. I have two speakers in a 08(hornby), 31,33,37,47,50,60,66,67 and 158. Ieven fitted two speakers in a cbachmann 20 when i did it 1st time round. It was by far the hardest install i have ever done as it has express lighting fitted two. The second 20 (pair of DRS) one has the one speaker. Between the both there is not much difference. Other than that, always try to fit a baffle box, try one speaker then try two speakers and also the location on the speaker can make a difference.

57 is supposidly available from howes but it is seemingly always out of stock, its a strange way to run a business. SWd are doing a 57, but I dont think we will see it till 2008.

Well the intructions from Steve at SWD for the 20 says move the fan shorten the spindle get rid of the fan surround and don't use the baffle box as there just is not room. I don't see how there is room either it is 'pretty' tight so how to get a lighting kit in as well baffles me beyond belief!

I think Tuesday at the club we will be fitting an extra speaker and trying the baffle box to see if we can improve the noise.

sorry, should have made myself more clear. No baffle box on the 20x40 under the class 20 fan, but the 23 ml in the cab does have one.

Simon
Is there any chance of some pictures of your layout please?

Pete
When you fit 2 speakers how do you connect them, in series or parallel?
QUOTE (Peter_Harvey @ 1 May 2007, 07:32) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Is there any chance of some pictures of your layout please?

Pete

I am in the middle of extending one of the boards by 2 ft so the layout is stretching its legs from 8-10 foot, more siding space for more sound chipped locos!
As soon as its done, hopefully about this time next week, I will take some photos and i will be doing sme more u-tube clips of the layout in operation.
I presume there is a members layouts section on this forum somewhere? There are on most others I am on, not uup to 4!

Hello Squeaky,
I note you are in Caldicot. A good friend of mine, a fellow Barry & Penarth MRc member lives there. He is re-painting my backdrops at the moment due to the extension mentioned above. Perhaps you know him, Dave Woolnough. I should be calling Friday evening to pick them up either on the way to the bristiol show, or more likley on the way back.

As for speakers, you connect in parrallel. You also need to connect the same conections. i.e. with the two speakers for example both pointing the same way, say up as your looking at the back of them, you need to connect the left to the left, the right to the right.

Hope that makes sence?
