I think a book was published about 10-12 years ago about Southern Engine workings - it might help. I'll track down the title, author, publisher and ISBN number when I get to my library next.

It's actually Southern Region Engine workings by C J Gammell, it was published by OPC. Although out of your time scale it does contain useful information about train workings.
