The St Albans South box will be open on the second and fourth Sunday afternoons of each month from 2pm to 5pm from 12th April 2009 until October 25th inclusive. There will be extended opening in September for the National Heritage 'Open Days' weekend - see our website www.sigbox.co.uk for the latest information.

We are in Ridgmont Road, off Victoria Street, in St Albans, Herts, about 200 yards south of the exit from platform 4 of St Albans City station on the St Pancras/Bedford line - local services run by First Connect Capital. No postcode available for Satnav users, the National Grid Reference is TL156069. Parking outside the box is free on Sundays but there is a small charge in the adjacent NR station carpark. Please note access to this part of Ridgmont Road is ONLY from Victoria Street.

The box is unique in several ways:
It is the largest Midland Railway type 2A box perserved
It has the largest (44 lever) 'tumbler locking' frame left in the country
It is preserved where it has stood since being erected in 1892.

Entry is FREE, but donations to help us continue to preserve the box and develop our railway heritage exhibits will, of course, be most welcome!

Photographs of the restoration work can be seen at This Topic and will be updated from time to time.
