Hi Cliff
I have not seen the Magazine photos , but I have a model of the Stanier 0-4-4T which I have numbered LMS 1908 . When I purchased it it had a stovepipe chimney with which they ran for a time . I cant say I liked it so I replaced it with a spare Hornby Jinty one . My model is pretty old and I am sure it was made from a Jamieson brass kit. These models do appear on E-Bay from time to time. As the class was pretty short on numbers I doubt a RTR model would ever be made. If you are unable to source a kit I would be tempted to have a go at modifying a Hornby Jinty.
Cheers Tony

I imagine it's from a kit, not sure which one though! The purist would shudder no doubt, I wonder if use could be made of an M7 chassis to go under that Jinty conversion?

Hi . I think I would use a Jinty chassis by removing the last pair of wheels and coupling rods . Replace all remaining wheels with spares from a Hornby 2-6-4T.The wheel spacings of the 0-6-0 match up to the 0-4-4T.The rear bogie would need to be scratch-built , on the lines of a coach bogie attached with a screw , this could have a coil spring to, aid balance and traction . This is the arrangment used on my brass model .This conversion should be easy if China parts are used( with hex headed coupling rod screws etc ). With reference to a good drawing and some photos ,converting the Jinty body should be fairly straight forward. Although I would not consider another Stanier tank I am sure the same principles could be used on an ex- Midland 0-4-4T which I have been considering for some time. I have recently modified an old Jinty body into an ex- Midland 1F 0-6-0T with open cab. Using the current China 0-6-0 chassis it made up into a reasonable model, capable of hauling 20 wagons on my train-set even up the inclines. Not for the purist I agree, but I enjoy kit or RTR bashing and when all said and done I finish up with something I have made instead of constantly whinging about the manufacturers not making a RTR model.
I hope I have given you an idea or two and something to think about and possibly some inspiration to have a go.
If so, then enjoy!
Tony
