Hello, I am looking for a scale plan of Swanage & Bournemouth West around the post war period, all the track diagrams I have found are not to scale or do not give any idea of scale. Could someone please help and tell me if they know of any sources for plans for the above 2 stations.

many thanks

QUOTE (rb277170 @ 25 Apr 2007, 20:19) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>"The Somerset and Dorset Then and Now" Mac Hawkins 1986 by Guild Publishing/ Patrick Stephens Ltd has the trackplan of Bournemouth West.

This is a very good book with maps /trackplansn of many of the stations on the Somerset & Dorset. It waas my intention to use this to build a replica of the route in trainz railway simulator.

I have both version of the book and if I remember they are 1901 edt OS maps which predate my era by about 60 years and there were some changes to the layout. Out of all the S&D stations it's the one I wanted to do due to it being a Termini and Bath is too big, thats why I wanted Swanage as a fall back as an alternative but a scale plan is as elusive as Bornemouth.

QUOTE (John Webb @ 26 Apr 2007, 21:59) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>I think the sketch plan on page 13 of the Ian Allan Special is in proportion if not to a particular scale. If you can get a map of Swanage, you could try copying the sketch, preferably onto copier OHP film, and overlay onto the map. Vary the 'zoom' on the copier until the roads in the sketch line up with the map.

The Special also has plenty of photos with Mk1 coaches in. You could use the length of these to estimate the lengths of the platforms and hence the size of the station.

If I remember there is a shot of a r/b WC overhanging the crossing, and it states that trains of X length fouled the crossing and had to be seen off manualy. Time to dig out the book again.
