This is the first article in a short series on the tramroad and later railway that served the Penrhyn Quarries, bringing slate down to Porth Penrhyn...

My second article about the Penrhyn Quarry Railway covers the line built for steam locos. This article considers the line from Porth Penrhyn to Felin-Fawr and the entrance to the Quarry. I have not covered the preservation activities which for a time were active at Felin-Fawr. A further article will deal with the quarry's internal railways. ....

I have a book on this set up and it is really rather interesting not the least of it being the fact that as you are near Snowden you have no idea that the mountain to the north is hollowed out, also too the station and dock at Porth Penrhyn and the charming dock office, also having dual gauge track for standard and narrow gauge, now Bachmann have released the ir latest OO9 narrow gauge models of the Penrhyn Railway Mainline Hunslets so I gotta get one of those, two of the three are in mint black finish whilst Linda looks a little more 'used' so I'll go for that one, not sure of the prices for these models but they must be £150 plus as the smaller Quarry Hunslets also from Bachmann are coming out at £139-£149 although they are very prettily turned out.

So yes a fascinating industrial railway with a lot going on, sadly just not enough space to fit it all in

Hi kristopher1805
It is a fascinating little railway as is the nearby Dinowic Railway: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinorwic_quarry

Modelling of the PQR might be restricted to a section of the Penrhyn Quarry at the top of the line and a second length finishing with the Porth Penrhyn facilities. Both have an overbridge quite close to the facilities. With a little more space, you could include Felin Fawr at the Quarry end of the line as that has a footbridge which could be a scenic break.

Very best wishes

Roger
