That answers some questions. While the Pembrokeshire coast path was in 'prototype' form, I walked it as one of a party of six, commencing from Saundersfoot. Having gone for the obligatory paddle on getting off the train (to amuse the 3 girls) we could see the narrow anthracite seams on the beach, and the remnants of the mining railway which we followed on our walk to the Youth Hostel, then about a quarter mile West of Saundersfoot station - it may well still be in that location - and I was quite impressed at the low ceiling of the one tunnel bore we saw.

Local knowledge was limited, the YH warden was a relief so barely knew the area, and we were striding away to Freshwater early the next morning (the whole route very strongly recommended for anyone who likes a bracing seaside walk and swimming in stunning coastal scenery). And now near fifty years on, the answers.. Thanks Roger.
